I was reading through the Automatic Tranny forum, and I was actually really interested in getting an ATF cooler, but then someone mentioned overcooling. I did a couple of searches, and nothing really pertained to it.

I live in Alaska, and it gets to about (-10) - (-15) degrees Fahrenheit in the winters, and maxes out at about 80ish during the summers. Granted, it's not that bad, but what kind of problems would I get if I did get an automatic tranny cooler? Is there a core size I SHOULD get, or is the stock OEM cooler good enough?

What mods do you have done?
Your stock atf cooler should suffice really in those temperatures.
I've run my car through those temps, with the stocker.
Never heard about overcooling though.. If your transmission and everything is running, I dont really see how it could be overcooled.
You could always email John, at IPT and see what he'd recommend..

I don't think it's ever a bad thing to give an a/t extra TLC like with an aftermarket cooler. I installed mine in series with the oem radiator one for that extra bit of protection, granted I'm in hot ass FL. Still, I think you're referring to those IPT coolers with the wider tubes that allow cold atf to bypass the cooler's longer route on startups. Maybe that'd be the way to go in Alaska. In Florida I just went with regular tube-fin design as I don't need to worry about that.

What IS overcooling anyways?

I've heard the term a couple times on this Forum, but they just go over it vaguely. Is it when your ATF just freezes over? Do I have to worry about this normally?

Howie~

Not quite freezing, but too cold to work effectively.

I'd call your trans fluid manufacturer and rely on their guess before asking a bunch of people who think frost on the car means it was cold last night.
