Where is a good spot for the sending unit?

Anyone that has installed on, please PM me.

There are blocks available that enable you to put the sender in the cooler return line, which will give you the most accurate reading and the cleanest installation.

-John

The return line reading will measure the transmission fluid temperature as it is returning to your transmission after being cooled. At this point, the fluid that is being pumped through the cooler turns into the pressure fed lube oil for the geartrain.

Measuring the fluid here will also tell you if your cooler or coolers are working adequately.

-John

If one were to have an aftermarket cooler also, would you place the sending unit after the stock cooer or the aftermarket?

It would need to go after the cooler or coolers.

Transdude, I wa sunder the impression i needed a probe for the tranny temp guage. Can you point me in the right direction or give me a more descriptive name for this block that goes into the return line?

Thanks.

I don't mean to push Transdude out of the way but, if he does not, B&M sells a transmission temp gauge. I used one a long time ago on a 1970 Cutlass. All you have to do is T into the trans line for the temp probe then wire in the gauge.

I have an autometer trans guage, I need a unit that will attach to that. The back looks to be setup the same as an EGT by autometer.

I'm going to have to order one of these blocks from IPT. What all is needed to install it?

Whats a good trans temp gauge? Will just an Autometer Phantom #5757 work? I already have an Autometer Phantom EGT, Boost/Vac and A/F gauge. Sorta like them to match unless there is a better gauge.

Ya I ordered one too. I'm going to go pick up a tranny temp gauge tomarrow locally. I didnt know it was this easy to install a temp gauge. Hell I woulda done it a couple years ago had i known that.

Im planning on ordering the autometer trans temp gauge and they make one that goes up to 280 degrees or 250. Will my auto tranny ever get up to 280 degrees????

You better hope that it doesn't get to 280, but if it does you won't need a gauge to tell you that you're FUKT.

what is "normal" temp for A/T's??

150 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit is about normal, with 150 being better.

The return line is the one that goes to the top of the trans- nearest to the firewall, you will need to trace that to the cooler.

I just received my electric temperature gauge for my tranny. I was wondering how other people have installed their gauges because there are NO threads about installing it. I was thinking of maybe T"ing into one of the cooler lines BEFORE it is cooled. Use a brass tee that i can put the sender in. Do you think that would work? Let me know what you think and what you yourself did.
