I was wandering if i can just find a larger tranny cooler and just take the stock one off and hook the new one up to the stock lines, or is there a better way to run a tranny cooler?

i believe that i spoke with him about this issue.

i believe that you need the stock unit. i think it is always best to leave the stocker where it is.

run the lines from the tranny to the stock cooler then take those lines that would normally run back to the tranny and run them to the aftermarket cooler. than take them and run them back to the tranny.

Stock : Tranny -----> Tranny cooler -----> tranny

With tranny cooler : Tranny ---> Tranny cooler ----> aftermarket tranny cooler -----> Tranny

Wait for transdude to respond to this post, but i am pritty sure how it goes.

If the vehicle is using the radiator as a trans cooler, I like to keep that and send the fluid to an external cooler after that.

If the vehicle is only using a factory external cooler (some of the later model year vehicles), it can just be replaced with one that offers more heat rejection.

I've been looking in to this as well. I'm running the 41TE and have just had it rebuilt by a co-worker. I've got the Final Drive mod done for the side gears and put all new clutches, discs, and seals in it. However, I know that many of the old clutches got pretty hot. I did not have any problems with the trans except slower track times and higher CVI's. I upgraded to ATF+4 for the rebuild.

I was told not to put the oil cooler in until I buy a thermostat for the cooler to allow the oil to actually get to the rght temp. Does anyone know what the proper operating temperature of ATF+4 is so I know what degree thermostat to buy? Next question would be where to get said thermostat?

The oil cooler I'm going to use is about the length and height of an FMIC and about 1" thick. It is brand new and fits a new body style Chrysler Minivan.
