1G-specific Installing Prothane Engine Mounts - Fairly Easily

Well I found some pics on the PC of me installing prothane mounts so I figured I'd post up a quick how to. I've used this method on a quite a few Prothane installs and it hasn't failed me yet, and its quick.

Getting the mounts out of the car and back in is up to you, this just shows how to replace the stock pressed in inserts with Prothanes.

Tools Needed

* Bench Vice or Similar
* Electric Drill with random sized drill bits.
* Hammer
* Electric Sawzall with metal cutting blade
* Flathead screwdrivers or similar, misc sizes

Steps for installation

* First get the mount(s) out of the car and securely fasten it into the bench vice.

* Next get out your electric drill and bits. Find a good size bit, 1/2"-3/4" work best in my opinion. Proceed to run the drill back and forth and drill out as much of the stock rubber around the outer edge as you can. When you get alot of it drilled out you can use your hammer and pop out the inner mount, leaving only the pressed in steel ring and rubber left on.

* Once the big center section is out get out your sawzall and steel blades. Position the sawzall like in the picture and cut through the pressed in steel ring. Be carefull not to cut too far into the actual steel housing. All you want to do here is cut through the pressed in ring so it can be pry'ed out.

* Now that you have cut through the pressed in steel ring get out some old screwdrivers or other misc. sized tools to pry out the ring. Start with a small screwdriver first, and pound in between the steel ring and the ring housing with your hammer. Pound it in right at the seam of where you cut it. This is the hardest part. Keep pounding and moving the tool arond and proceed to use larger tools. Once you get a good strong screwdriver all the way in you can pry it back and forth, the ring will bend and it will either fall out or you can pop it out with your hammer.

* Now the pressed in ring is fully out its a simple task of sliding in your new Prothane mounts. Pop in one side, then the other, and finish off by sliding (or tapping) the metal pin in.

Thats it, your done and your new Prothane mount is in its new home.

Any questions, feel free to PM me and ask.

Nice work, Dan. This is exactly how I did mine as well.

A few additions and pointers:

When cutting through the "ring", make sure you're not cutting too deep into the housing of the mount.

And when inserting the urethane pieces, if they first seem tight fitting, try lubing them with motor oil or grease. It makes them slide in much easier.

Dan, if you want I can try to take some more photos as I'll be installing these over the winter.

I'd like to add that there are other ways of getting the stock pressed in mount out. Another thing I have done before is instead of using a drill, you can burn out the rubber with a torch. If you heat along the outside of the rubber and around the ring, it will catch on fire but will eventually literally fall out. Then you can proceed to cut out the metal ring. You can also use a hand hack saw if you don't have a sawzall. Easiest way to do this is disassemble the saw, and slide the blade through the mount, then reassemble the saw to cut through the ring.
