How to Re-Key a 2g Door lock

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

So let me guess. You either lost the only key you had to your DSM, or your lock is frozen. Either way, this tech article should be able to help! Ive tried searching for a thread like this for a little while and didnt come up with much, so i figured id make one. My lock has been taken apart before, so its filled with neverseize.

Tools i used==
--Gnarly file
--WD40 (or whatever kind of gunk you like to use to free up things)
--A kitchen knife that your girlfriend doesnt mind you ruining
-- A rugged pick
--Needle nose pliers (Not pictured)
-- A tiny hammer
-- A tiny flathead screwdriver
--Patience

First off, if you havnt gotten your lock cylinder out yet, use this link. It pretty much shows how the key cylinder is held in the handle, and how to take the handle out.

So youre gonna start with this stuff (the pick isnt pictured)

First off, lets look at the cylinder real quick. The yellow plastic peice is what tells the car its being unlocked. Its easy to take off with a small flathead screwdriver

Underneath that is what looks like a screw, but its not. its the cylinder its self. What holds the little arm on is a small C clip. Carefully remove this C clip.

The little arm should pretty much fall off after

Yank this spring off

Now we can take the bottom half apart, This is pretty much just a cap, there are two dents on opposite sides of each-other that need to be pulled out. I just used a pick, and lightly tapped it until i could work the cap off.

NOTE: Mine has been taken apart before, and i broke this side, yours should have a little more metal to it.

So under that big cap, is another little cap, and under that little cap there is a little door. That little door has a spring behind it. So take that cap off and lets see whats inside!

Now that the bottom half is apart, youre going to want to soak this for quite a while in WD40 or the equivalent.

Once its been bathed in your favorite lube (Giggity) youre ready to take the center piece out.
Tap the top half on a hard surface until it comes out

Now youll notice that there are these little blades inside the tumbler.
DONT REMOVE ALL OF THEM AT ONCE!

Remove one of them and inspect it. Does it move smoothly inside the little slot? does the spring underneath it move up and down? if not, slide it up and down the file a few times (or some sandpaper)

Before you put it back in, coat it with a little neverseize.

Now comes the fun part!
Push all of the little tabs down with your fingers and work the key all the way in until it wont go any further. Now let the blades go up. See how they still stick up? we have to fix that. Take the blades out one by one and file them down until theyre flush with the cylinder. If some of your blades stays down with the key out, its probably frozen. I used the small screwdriver and a tiny hammer till mine came free enough for me to work them out with needle nose pliers. The little peices are very fragile, so take your time. The blades sticking up when the key is out is what keeps it from spinning, or being unlocked by any old key. When your key goes in, all of the blades should be flush with the cylinder

Now put the cylinder back in the sleeve it came out of (easiest with the key in the cylinder. Does it spin freely? if not, all of your blades are flush, if it does, than put some neverseize in the shaft. Take the key back out and make sure it doesnt spin. Test it a few times.

At this point, all you have to do is re assemble this thing, and put it back in your car and viola, youre a locksmith.

If ive missed anything, feel free to PM me.
