Ok I took alot of pictures of my install of a radar detector in my console. As much as I dont like cutting dash peices, I think this really looks good, and since I live in VA where dectors are illegal, it wont been seen by the cop-passer-by. Installation was very simple, but there is one thing you really have to watch out for - the mounting point for the shift boot. You will see what I mean in the pictures. I choose the Whistler Pro 3450 since its 1. remote mount, 2. x/k/ka/laser, 3. only $170 new on ebay. Plus you can plug a speaker into it for voice alerts. I have not finished the motor in my car, so I have not had a chance to use the detector, or even mount the sensor, but that is all personal preference anyway.
Here is what you need :
1. Radar dector - a remote mount unit, the 3450 is the cheapest new model I have found from anyone
2. Dremel tool or some other device for cutting the dash.
3. Phillips screwdriver
4. Common sense - optional, but needed if you want it to look good
First remove your center console - you should allready know how to do this - 6 screws, shift knob, 6 or so electrical wires.
Then what I did was trim the template that came with the detector and placed it roughly where I wanted it. I noticed on the back of the console there is a post for the shift boot to screw into. This is important - you want to place the template over enough so that you dont cut off the mounting post, but not too far close to the cigarette lighter. The reason is the dash curves slightly and the detector will not sit flush if you move it over too much. I used the blue 3m tape to place the template down, it is not too sticky and will not leave residue behind. Then I cut out the hole using a cutter bit that looks alot like a drill bit. Be carefull as the bit tends to 'fly'. After I took off the template I had to trim alittle more plastic to fit the bracket in, and I just used a round sander bit. Then just place the bracket down and screw it on. You will notice the screw on the passenger side will go through the post for the shift boot, this is fine, and the boot's screw will not hit it. I think the pictures speak for themselves too. Now you can avoid those nasty tickets and not have some box hanging from the windshield !
