Hello All-

I have a 95 GST with the infinity sound system. I am in the process of installing an aftermarket head unit and bypassing the infinity amp. (unless someone knows how to integrate it) I have done some searching but have not found any sites with help on this topic. (any links would be great)

Do I just twist the front left and left door speaker wires together and attach that to the new head unit? (ie. Front left speaker Neg + Left door speaker Neg + Head unit front left neg, Front left speaker Pos + Left door speaker Pos + Head unit front left Pos)

Or is there a trick to wiring a new head unit into the infinity amp? My HU is a JVC-SX980, it has preamp outs so I figured it would be possible to integrate with the amp but the people I have talked to at a few installation places are saying to bypass it.

Thanks

Don't listen to those people that you talked to your stereo will sound better if you use the factory amp until you have the money to upgrade all your speakers and the amp too.

It is very easy to integrate the factory amp, you can do it by using an adapter made by Peripheral.... Check out this LINK . It goes to another thread at DSMtalk where I told someone how to do it. I bought it and it is very easy to install, don't let his problems deter you I do not believe that they have anything to do with the adapter. I have the exact same car as you and have a Clarion head unit running to the factory amp with no problems at all and it sounds great.

Later,
Nate

Thanks,

I think I found the part you mentioned...

http://www.autosoundgear.com/Value/itemdesc.asp?CartId=ACCWARE-14541527GKMTT428&ic=MITAH&Cc=&tpc=

This ssem to be it. The only problem now is that I already removed the amp and rewired it. Its an easy fix to re integrate the amp. I have a better understanding of how they integrate the amp.

However I am curious as to what this statement means...

"Requires low voltage trigger (see LVT) when replacing amp. 6 pin DIN to 4 RCAs & Turn-on lead."

I take it that the turn-on lead tells the amp to "turn on", does that connect to a LVT on the head unit?

Thanks again,
Spanky

Yeah just connect the blue wire from the adapter to your remote turn-on output from your head unit.

Also I noticed that the wires leading to and from the doors and the rears(not the front dash speakers) are wired into the head unit. But all the speakers are also wired to the amp. Why is this?

Are the amp and the Head unit both provideing power to speakers?

When I restore the amp using the above cable should I sever the connections I made from the head to the speakers? And just let the amp provide power to the speakers?

I don't know why that would be, I didn't notice it. It doesn't make any sense.

Yes, The head unit I have is a top of the line Clarion and it doesn't have any speaker level outputs, the only thing it has is 3 sets of RCA's

I just took the wiring harness and hooked up the Power, Ground, and Memory wires and plugged it into the stock stereo plug.

I then took 2 small sets of RCA's and plugged them into the front and rear outputs and into the Peripheral adapter and plugged the adapter into the stock wire that goes to the amp. After this was done I turned it on and everything worked and sounded great.

I attached a diagram of what I mean....Connect only the wires I mention in the diagram and every thing should work correctly.

Excellent! Thats exactly what I wanted to know. I have ordered the adapter and will re-integrate the factory amp when it arrives. A thousand thanks!

I have a JVC-SX980 and I really like it so far. Nice mp3 playback features but without the amp there its more distorted than the factory head unit. I will let you know how it sounds with the factory amp back in the mix.

I re-integrated the amp once I recieved the above adapter from peripheral. It sounds about 10 times better now than when it was bypassed.

As for leaving the stock plugs intact...

You can see how much trouble I was having just getting a head unit in. The audio shops I talked to said to bypass the amp. So the long and short of it is... they're gone.

However for anyone about to replace the head unit on thier DSM with the infinity system the this thread should be invaluable.

One downside to the peripheral adapter is that the plugs arent marked. So you dont know which set goes to the front and which to the back. I had a 50/50 shot unfortunately I lost. I should have tested it before I buttoned it up but its an easy fix.

Thanks again all!

If you are looking to upgrade it, you can't easily. If you are looking to replace it, DON'T lose the connecter on the harness side. In a flurry of stereo swapping I had some friends over and one cut that connector off and chucked it. You can't order it seperately, and Radio Shack doesn't carry the right format for it. It will cost you about $1000 for a whole wiring harness to replace that one connecter. As for trying to make an aftermarket amp work from a factory deck. Doesn't work. The factory deck uses an "S" type looking connector and the factory amp seperates it into channels and amplifies the signals afterwards. If somehow you find a way to use the factory deck with an aftermarket amp (anyone?) please tell me how.

I took the amp out with no problem, everything still works fine. I dont plan on amping the speakers, just the subs and the deck I have has a subwoofer preamp output so its all good :D If anyone wants the factory deck and amp lemme know I'll give it away pretty cheap.

Couldn't you use the adapter made by Peripheral in the reverse way to go from the stock cable to RCA's ?

Hey I am into performance alot more than stereos but I was wondering... I have the Infinity 8 speaker premium system stock in my 99 gs and it pounds pretty nice for being stock and I don't wanna put alot of money into subs and an amp and everything... If i would get an amp hooked up to my stock system would it make it pound any harder? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't know much about systems.

I am relatively new with electronics as well but i'd think you'd need some sort of Sub with an amp or else there would be nothing to pound, am i right?

I have two Rockford He2 12s and a 1000 watt rockford punch amp ;)

To answer your question better, In theory you'd get more power to the speakers, making them hit harder. But, you'll probally just blow them as soon as they get more power anyway. So, you can upgrade the speakers and then put in an amp, yeah. I wouldn't leave the stock ones in. The easiest way to get a good sound is just to add subs. Components aren't meant to "pound", subs are..so start saving shop on ebay get a cheap amp and some decent subs :thumb:

Edit : Well, most headunits only have 4 outputs for speakers..and you have 8 speakers if im not mistaken...so you'd probally have to buy a new headunit to put subs in, cause i doubt the Headunit you have , has preouts for an amp.

You sure it's 8? I've got the Infinity System in my GSX and I only count 6. 2 in the dash, two in the doors and 2 in the back side panels.

I thought it was 8... that's what the paper about the car said but maby it is 6 because looking at it you are right I only see 6... It does pound pretty good tho for being stock my mirros all pound and stuff... I'm just gonna forget the whole thing and put the money into performance stuff like my turbo kit.. Thanx tho.

Only reason I ask is because I am gonna do the same thing.. Swap out the stock amp for a 5 channel and then add a subwoofer to the trunk.. ~500 bux which ain't bad at all..

even though you've decided against it,i'll inform you that it is very possible to amp a factory stereo, you can cut an rca cable in half, strip down so you have the positive and negative and run leads from your rear speakers through the rca cables to your amp input, given your amp is hooked up correctly, theres your insta-boom on the factory stereo.

now thats ghetto! :thumb:

I have a 97 Eclipse the radio doesnt have any audio output, do these have a seperate amp or is all built into the head unit?
