whats the difference between bandpass, sealed, ported etc? im a newbie when it comes to audio so i have no idea. and yes ive even searched...

and i have a 12w6 sub and a power aquistic amp laying around and all i need is a box...would just a regular square $50 box sound ok? i dont wanna spend too much money cuz im not really into audio.

bandpass r closed in behind plexi glass sally, the ported have port holes, and the sealed r normal boxes wit subs sticking out

bandpass boxes sound like ass and ported boxes dont sound too much better - ive only heard a few ported boxes that sound good and only a slim number of them soundly VERY good... sealed is the way to go, and yea a single sealed box for 50 bucks is average price :thumb:

I always go with sealed box's. Also they make a cotton looking material you can put in there that is SUPOSED to improve the sound quality I think. But I have never used the stuff..

cotton things = polyfill.

We use them to make a box seem bigger than it really is. Polyfill has a characteristic to it which actually slows down the sound-wave, which makes it longer to reach the back of the box, to bounce back.

Generally bigger boxes = boomier bass

Smaller boxes are tighter...speaking generally of sealed, at least.

As far as porting your box, it would involve taking measurements and allowing a port of some sort, whether it be slotted or tube. By using PVC or some other material, the port size is cut to specification on what hz you'd like to be tuned at. Which is why SPL nuts will mention they had X sub in a ported box tuned to X hz.

Bandpass is a waste of time, unless you actually build a bandpass enclosure SPECIFICALLY for the sub (s) intended to go with it.

SPL competitors almost ALWAYS go ported, whilst SQ competitors have fiberglassed custom enclosures...snail shell or sealed.

Hope that cleared things up! :thumb:

And in my opinion, ive never heard a ported enclosure setup i liked. Im an SQ guy though, so maybe thats why.

Ported enclosures usually get REALLY REALLY loud. but really retain not as much sound quality, and kick as a sealed box. If you listen to rap, or hip hop...than ported is for you.

Anything else which requires faster, more precise bass such as punk, rock, electronic...etc.. would sound much better sealed.

^^ yep he is absolutely right.

I personaly love techno and heavy metal.. so I am going with a 10" compition visionik in a sealed box. IF and thats a big IF I put a sub in my car...

(might just put in some good 6x8's)
