Changing amber instrument illumination?

The stock illumination color for 1g's is amber (duh), but where does that color come from? Are the lights tinted or is there a filter somewhere? I'd like to make it more or less amber, the way it is now it just kinda looks dirty. The gauges themselves are fine, but I wouldn't mind a cleaner white or a more reddish color, any ideas?

bulbs are orange.

no bulbs in a 1g cluster are clear, but something in the cluster is orange that can be sanded off as i am told to make everything white, or add some blue bulbs in the back to change the color.

it is on the back of the guage, it has a yellow orange paint that makes the color, wet sand the actual back of the guage face with 400 wet and it will come right off. then you can either find a translusent paint to put back or bulb rubbers or even led to change the color
