I got 2 horrible rust area's on my 1990 Talon. I plan on cutting it out with my cutting wheel and the filling with bondo or cutting the section out of my parts car and having it welded in. I dont plan on reapinting the area, as I am getting a set of stock white side skirts from a guy here in town soon. Looking for Idea's.

Worst possible idea....as a body guy, you gotta trust me. If you do that, water will just get into the bondo from behind, and you'll have an even bigger mess. If your going to do it, do it right, cut the rust out, clean the areas very very good, and have an actuall welder MIG weld in the new peices, , just make sure they dont leave any holes, because water will get through them....once its welded in place, grind the welds smooth, and the use body filler to make the area smooth and flat, and dont forget to use a silicone sealent from the back side for extra protection....

Also bondo is not waterproof make sure you prime over it.Water will eventually seep through the primer too, so even if the area is hiddin painting is your best option.

well, I talked to my do it all mechanic/race car builder today and he says he will fix it for me. He says he will cut it out and fiberglass it. I got 2 rust areas.

1 Rsuty Area under the passenger door which is pretty much rusted trhough and about 4x4 its a big hole.

Other rust area is clost to that, bottom of passenger wheel well

If hes experienced like I think he is he says he can cut it out fiberglass it and do some touchup paint. I am good with that dont goota look perfect I just want the rust to stop I plan on addin orm sideskirts soon anyways but wanna take car of this first.

I've heard that fiberglass expands a little in the heat. Does anyone know if this is true? I have a rust problem too and was going to cut it out and fiberglass over it but I'm concerned that after I paint my car there will be an outline of where the fiberglass went.
Ive heard of this happening to ppl when they shave their door handles and stuff like that.

There are alot of things to getting glass to blend right.

I'd just learn to weld.

Get a mig. Some scrap metal and practice.

I'm getting good as hell with mine.

No that I got a auto darkening helmet I'm even better.

I swear to god that running a wire feed mig is like riding a bike.

When you are wet behind the ears you need training wheels. Once you get the hang of it is pretty easy.

Just practice the same type of weld with the same gauge scraps as the actual pieces. If you blow a hole in it or cold weld or other whoops on the scrap is the time to do it.

Get good at it and all your buddys will pay you to do sh*t.

so everyone thinks welding in a new piece of metal and sanding the welds down is the best. I am gonna have my mechanic guy do it. i will cut it out and cut the same section of one of my parts cars to weld in there for a perfect fit. Weld it in and grind/sand it smooth. A can of dupli-color and some good oem side skirts and it wont even be noticeable. I found that dupli-color linen white is a very close match to the white paint on my 90 talon.

It depends on the resin used.Fiberglass has no place in autobody metal repair PERIOD.Welding will be easier, cleaner, and better in the long run.Make sure you cut out the metal an inch or two beyond the rust.

I will be sure to cut a lil bigge piece from the parts car when welding it into my car. I got a big hole under the pass. door that goes all the way through! I can push on it and hear it go crunch. Cant wait to get it fixed
