ok so i just got my vis js carbon fiber hood yesterday (which looks pretty bad ass) and one of my friends said i should wet sand it or it will keep getting dusty or something like that. any truth to this? if so, how do i go about wet sanding my new hood?
thanks,
jim

Never heard that one...I wouldn't recommend wet sanding ANY clear coat finish unless you're very skilled in the process.

You do not wet sand it unless you are going to reclear coat it!!! If you sand it and do not clear coat it you will have it looking cloudy all the time. And it would be senseless to wet sand it and only buff it back out. Why? Just leave it alone. VIS uses a UV stable gel coat.

...and whether you like them or not you had better use hood pins! VIS is notorious for flying up. I don't care how good they say they are made. Use hood pins or one day you'll be posting it up. Or at least get a safety chain.

I wonder what your friend thinks wetsanding is. Perhaps he's thinking claybar, but even that's not needed for years.

id disagree with you there...i clay bar my car once a month, it doesnt take more then 10 minutes and cant hurt any

You claybar your car once a month?
Then you ARE waxing it once a month as well, right? I think that's simply unnecessary.

ok guys thanks for the help. i thought it was jibberish but not really sure. i will make sure to get the hood pins right away.

You, my friend, are insane.

And judging from your post, seems you're not aware that polishing and waxing are totally two different things.

Polishing is not meant to be layered - it's a polish, an abrasive. It removes old coats of wax. It cannot be layered. It removes oxidation from your car's surface. Basically removes a microscopic layer of paint/clearcoat. DO NOT do it unless absolutely necessary. Claying falls in this same category.

Waxing is a protective coat. This is the one that might be layered, and not 9782348972348237 layers. Few layers are enough, allowing first layer to dry at least 12 - 24 hrs. Coat - protection. Polishing - abrasive.

On to of all that, only one coat every six months is sufficient.

You will destroy your car's paint/clearcoat if you keep polishing/claying every week.

Do some research. :thumb:

zaino is a polish, zaino is meant to be layed

yes i am confident i know more then you about detailing as i have been doing it for awhile, and yes i do know the difference between a polish and a wax

thats the thing about clay, it WILL NOT hurt your finish, you would have to try your hardest to get it to hurt your finish, and i only do it once a month or so

mothers reflections, what i use, has very little to no abrasive in it, then if im in the mood i top it with #26, and i do it so often because i have nothing else to do

how about you criticize someone elses plan, mine works just fine for me ;)

Alrighty.

P.S.: Look up the definition of "polish". Good luck with your car's paint, bro. Get some estimates on re-paint for future information gathering purposes. :thumb:

I'm not criticizing. I'm simply attempting to make you aware. And quit editing your post. ;)

hmmm..sound weird though.Polish is polish and wax is wax. Polish "rubs up" old surface just as said above and removes old dirt and oxidations on the paint.Wax is a protective substance that is layered for best protection.Using polish every wekend canot be that good for the paint..period.
Anytime you use polish on a waxed surface you remove the old wax....and not adding new wax will make the surface protection worse then it was before.Yes it can loko likeit is good for the moment but it will not be good for the surface in the long run...simple as that.

i dont do it *every weekend*

i do it on my moms focus whenever im in the mood for cleaning or if i need the car to look good, i wash the car and clay if needed, then polish it
ive only done it a few times this year, mothers reflections is more of a multi use product because it is sort of a polish and wax, mostly i will do a coat of this stuff once a month and top it with meguiars #26 and call it a month

edit: i was making an example by saying i do it every weekend, have i done it multiple weekends in a row? yes, but i dont do it EVERY weekend

I don't wash my car becuase it...errum....helps with the sleeper effect...umm yea thats it.
