altering tail lights

has anyone ever been puled over for altering their tailights? i'm thinking of changing mine to a 3 circle design, where two circes for the brake and 1 for the turn. the guy at the cop shop said that i can't change the 'capacity' of the tailight. so i figure that i am slightly decreasing the area, but if i up o LED lights i would have pletny of light, plus we got the third bake light. i wa just curious if a cop sees my lights, that they would cathc me, or if it is something so insignificant that they would never notice it? i will mask off the circles (they are as large as i can fit. then paint the rest black to amtch my car, i've already done the center yesterday, and peel off the round stickers so tha the light can come through. i would like to hear from you bout ur experiences, and maybe even pics of ur lights, and if u have been told to change them or not.

Exactly what krazy said. Stock is better. I just tinted mine. Its getting old to me and Im going to take them off. The tint just comes off with Finger Nail Pollish Remover.

i think the stock looks is too big and square. i made a paper pattern, and taped it over my taolils and i thought it looked good. the only reason y i am am hesitating to do them is the 'legal factor' i wanna know how hard cops look for altered tails, and if they are after them at all

It's _probably_ illegal, but unless you over do it by covering too much, I don't think it's likely you'd get cited for it. I have seen other cars with this done in the gallery.

What's wrong with changing the lights? If that is what he likes, I don't see a problem with it. I don't really like the stock look of the lights myself, and hope to do something "different" some day...

found a solution, a local wreckers has a set of tails from a 90 talon, so i'm gonna get those (if they don't cost to much) and have a stock set, and a custom set so i can change if nessesary, or if some one really likes my custom set, i could sell them. when i ge3t them done i'll put of some pics of em, and tell ya how i did it

ive got NO stock tail lights.. and never got pulled over for it. my stock tails are blacked out.. and my i moved my tail lights to my reverse lights.

i don't ave photoshop, but paint will work fine just for a rough idea.

this is what i have in mind. the two middle circles are the brake, and the outside one is the turn. i am unsure if i should leave a line under the circles unpainted (this would then let some of the reflective stuff show thru. herres some pics. which one do u think would be better cuz at night u would only see the cicles anyways.

My opinion, I like the one the right .. and if the mod resembles even closely what you've drawn up I think it will look cool. And no worries about getting pulled over, because the cicles themselves are considered a red reflective surface (so either solution should work).

It should be legal. As long as functional as before, and don't cover up the reflector. Call DMV in your state and ask if you're not sure.

in B.C., the RCMP (cops) said that i cannot change the capacity of the tail lights. so that means i cannot change the performance of the tail lights, but i figure what i cover up can be made up by getting some brighter bulbs. i'll try to get another set of stock lights just incase. thanx for all ur opinions

i will be doing them next weekend, i will post some pics. does anyone know the code for the bulbs that are one level brighter?
