Why do these speakers sound like balls?

Okay, my dad just bought 4 sony xplod speakers to replace the stock ones in his 92 laser, and he removed the old ones by cutting the wire, then using a little peice of the new wire to connect to the new speakers. The head unit is nothing special, it's an alpine, but not a BAD one.

Now i didn't think speakers you could buy at walmart would be great, but i've heard they aren't too bad, but these things sound like nutsack.
they sound okay when you can barely hear them, but they handle absolutely no bass and distort a LOT in high volume.

I heard these things in the stores and they don't sound THAT bad!

What did we do wrong? And we didn't hook up the wires backwards...

ditto

You have to have good speakers for them to sound good. You have an Alpine head unit, which is good. Alpines have good sound quality. Get yourself some different speakers. See if you can't take those Xplodes back. You can get decent speakers at Wal-Mart, but you have to check brand names. Wal-Mart, I believe, carries Pioneer speakers which are usually pretty good. It would also be a plus if you ran better speaker wire to those speakers at some point. Depending on the wattage of your new speakers you may want to look into an amp, too. Otherwise your head unit may not have enough power to make them sound good. I doubt the lack of an amp really makes a difference with Xplode speakers.

Hmmm...I just reread your first post a little closer. You may benefit from an amp on those speakers, even tho they aren't quality anyways. Is the sound uniform across all speakers? If it is then I doubt the wiring is the major problem, but better wiring would obviously be better. And Alpine HU should power those speakers. Do you know the power rating for the speakers and the head? It should say somewhere on the box or in the manual. There will be peak and RMS values in watts. RMS is more important than peak. The RMS value for the speakers is what the speaker draws to constantly play, while peak is the loudest it can possibly hit. Most head units boast about their output wattage and only show the peak value while RMS is much lower.

Why buy sumthin named "Xplode", IMO, sony Xplode entire car audio series is garbage, from subs to speakers.........

you do know that subs are speakers, right? I heard that the series was named "Xplode" for a reason. They crap out and explode quickly and don't ever really sound good.

Yes Sony really dropped the bomb on their xplode speaker line (no pun intended)

positive an negative swiched?? i always heard when u switched them or somehting the bass was crap, i've never been able to switch them and have them sound like shit myself they walways sounded the same but maybe crappy sony's do.. idk i would try switching them couldn't hurt................later

my friend just got a amp for his speakers and it sounds really good im thinkin about doing it and i already got great speakers (all alipine type s front and back and then a type R sub and alpine deck

could be the speakers themselves are $hit like some are saying.... i have a sony xplod headunit and i think it did wonders for the sound compared to that stock garbage. if it's distortion, maybe you just need some major dynomat installed... i know my eclipse rattles a bit w/my infinity speakers but it's cuz of the car...not the speakers...if that makes sense.:thumb:

The Walmart X-Plod's are crap. Its Walmart what did you want? I'm not saying X-plod's are the best, but they have several different lines. The higher end lines are pretty good quality. You get what you pay for.

Yeah, Wal-Mart is the cheapest stuff Sony makes. Anything that's that cheap can't be all that great. The 1st gen XPlod stuff was pretty decent, the current high-end stuff is acceptable, but the new low-end stuff is definitely garbage. Not as bad as Profile, but not good ;)

i have the wal mart xpload 5.25 int he doors and backseat and they sound great... its the pos xpload headunit that cut out at high volume while the speakers hurt my ears they got so loud..... get subs and keep the bass down on them and they sound good
