need radio help

my friend gave me a din and a 1/2 cd/radio i have a wire harness but when i went to get the dash kit they said it wouldnt work on it so i didnt get it, anyone have any sugestions? im broke but i wanna play cds (cd player broke) is it cool to throw it in without a dash kit?

What make is it, what kind of "dash kit"?

its a pioneer i think its the ones meant for the GM cars being din and a half , and dash kit so it fits snug into the dash , what holds the radio in there (dont know the proper name)
