Well I am going to start saving for my paintjob this summer and I just wanted to know a couple things. My car is now that light blue color, and I hate it because its girlie looking. I plan and just getting the bottom half of my car painted a gun metal grey. When taking your car in I know you have to take the door panels and stuff off so it will look right, but what about the engine? I mean I dont want a grey and black car with a blue engine bay. Do I have to take it out or does the shop, Im guessing I have to. What are some of your guys experiences with getting your car painted and please, only people that have gone through it.

Well not myself personally, but others that I know have painted the car and going with a complete color change is very expensive and requires alot of work.... i.e. door removal and engine removal!
I have the same blue color you have I'm sure, and I have been checking around with a few local shops... here is what they tell me .... complete color change is very time consuming, you have to paint door jams and engine bay and every little nook and cranny in the car, they will not drop the engine, I have to (and then pay to have it towed)!!!! then they can do the complete color change!!!! another option is the spot color change.... WHAT IS THAT???? I asked.... well basically the name says it all... they paint the car, and then paint the spots that are noticeable...... door jams sides of the engine compartment trunk deck!!!! or you can go the best way IMO.... and do a similar color change .... i.e. light blue to WRX blue!!!!!! EASY EASY EASY.... it all depends on how much $$$$$$$ you have and how you want your paint job to come out!!!!! I myself am waiting to do the complete change but to a similar blue color (I LOVE IT)!!!!!!!! I hope this helps!!!!
Also you may want to check with your local body shops and see what they say!!!!! PEACE

The spot color change would work for me, only the stuff that is visible. Ill check into it, thanks for the advice.

how much does something like that cost? if one of you has price quotes, on those deals tell me how much they want for that....
thanks...

no price quotes, but I can tell you that it will depend on what color your going with usually black is cheapest and your wild colors like Kawasaki green are going to be outrageous! I myself like the WRX ridge blue and for a spot-color change I'm looking at around 800-900! that is a very professional paint job........ NOT your econopaint that you see for $149.00, this job comes with a 5year guarantee scratch and dent removal!!! the best way to find out quotes is just to visit your local shops tell them what you want and let them give you an estimate! I have been to probably 25-30 places here before I made my decision, words of advice ................ SHOP AROUND, you will more than likely find the same deal over and over again but you will come across one that will BEAT that deal down!

I went to two shops yesterday and got a price qoute on a spot color change on just the bottom half of my car. I told them that I wanted a gun metal grey just on the bottom then spot color the engine bay, door jams, ect. Both places said $3,500. So now I am thinking of a similar color change like the wrx blue or something. What color rims do you think would go good with my blue or a darker blue? Like a gunmetal or keep them silver? I want to see a 2g talon that has a wrx blue paint job with a cf hood. My stock hood is tore up so I need to replace it soon.

Door jambs should be included in any spot change paint job. I just got mine painted for 800.00 including wing/wiper removal. Just shop around. My previous quote was for 1300.00 without wing/wiper removal.

my cars color scheme is blue and white so if I get spot color change the whit left over will look like it's supposed to be that way :thumb:

3,500 OUCH OUCH OUCH .... what the H**L is that about ......... no way man I'm tellin you 8-900 at the most for a nice paint job! O.k. maybe a grand but no more, then again I don't know because you wanna go with this dual color scheme ...... SO maybe.. I would shop around some more before I dropped 3500 into a paint job! I think I would even travel to another city or state before I paid 3500!

Wow!! Body shops in your areas work for peanuts!!! I've worked in a couple of local shops and the ones that would paint an entire car for less than a grand just scare me. I've seen a thousand dollar job before and it is usually hack work. I do all of my own work since I work in a body shop and the materials alone cost almost a grand!! I just painted my car using aftermarket clears and primer. I did use a good PPG base though, lamborghini magic red mica (think orange supra in F+F, same color) with blue pearl ghost flames. I spent close to $700 on supplies! And your telling me a "good" job should cost no more than a grand?!? I get the shops discount on paint, now assuming they spend the same money on decent supplies how much prep work do you think your gonna get for an extra $200?? Think about that one for a moment, you get what you pay for. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about, I do it for a living. :talon:

Where in Florida are you? I just got mine back from a shop in South Florida. My original quote was $3,400 (I talked them down and worked out a deal though ;) ). I know a few people up in central Florida though who did get there paint jobs done for $800-$1,200. That didnt include the cut & buff. Now next to cars that had an expensive paint job, you can tell. It seems with paint, you get what you pay for. The cheaper it is, the more orange peel, more chipping. I had quotes from $650 through $4,000. Just be careful.

When I went for paintwork, I chose a scheme that would work with the engine bay color to cut down on the cost and time of removing the engine. I did yank the entire interior which helped the shop when they were painting in the door jams.

DAMN. i wish i could get a paint job for like 1,000. when i got my spoiler, i went and got quotes and the cheapest was like 800 to put it on and paint it. i even got one at 2,000!!!!!. i decided #### it and did it myself and went to maaco and got the whole car done for 400 w/ a 4 year warranty. but i was just wondering. how good is their paint? im gettin a kit soon and i want this thing to last. should i go back to them, or pay more for a good job? i was satisfied w/ their work, but for 400, something has to be wrong. should i go w/ them and until i get the $ get a good job or what? please some opinions.

NOTICE ...... I said I went to 25-30 diff. shops until I found one that met my specifications! and that was the one that quoted me $900..... so what I was trying to get across is YES you can get a good paint job for under 2Gs you just have to shop around...... AND AS WELL I WOULD HOPE THAT IF YOU PAID 3500 FOR YOUR PAINT JOB THAT IT WOULD LOOK BETTER THAN A 1000 DOLLAR PAINT JOB.............. COMMON SENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These price quotes are from so really high end shops. Their work is just amazing, ive seen it in person and in pictures. Im going to hold off on a paint job for a long ass time because that is almost as much as I paid for my 2g! I dont mind the blue so much, its kinda growing on me.

I went through a color change on my Datsun roadster, and even on that simple oxcart, it was a _lot_ of work. I don't know that I'd ever paint another, and my '94 really needs it. I did all the disassembly and reassembly labor myself, they did the bodywork and most of the prep.
Looking at the engine compartment on the DSMs, I just pale with the idea of having to change it.

It _is_ rather an attractive blue, isn't it?

OH YEAH it's a very attractive blue! BUT I know where he is coming from because if it is like mine it does look a little dull and faded on the outside, I recently began working on my interior and when I pulled the carpet it was such a vibrant blue, and when I look at the outside it is nowhere near the same color!!!!

UR OWNED... where did u get yours painted at. I'm going to be needing a paint job soon. I'm not im socal but im in Yuma,AZ which is about 3 hours away and the cheapest i've been able to find here was 2grand. I'll make the 3 hour drive to save a grand on a paint job, sheit i drive to LA just to get parts from RRE so i don't have to pay shipping. But if you could lemme know that'd be kick a$$, thanx
