YES, it's another tail light conversion that's been asked...

I'm converting my Spyder to the Talon body. I've been planning this for a long time, and now I finally have all the time to do it. However, and I know this has been asked many times, how the hell can I rewire the tail light harness to make the brake lights and blinker lights work properly for the Talon set-up? I've searched,
here: DSM Forums - Search Results
And here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...e-conversion-tail-light-wiring-edm-style.html
And here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/app...talon-tail-conversion-tail-light-wireing.html
So please, don't tell me to use the search feature, I have read through everything listed in those links with no success. Also don't tell me that going from Eclipse to Talon is the reverse of going from Talon to Eclipse. As far as the wiring is concerned, it's completely different.

Long ago, I had decided that getting a Talon tail light harness and splicing it into a Spyder's tail harness from up under the dash where it all connects would be the best route, and despite my failed attempt at this, I still think it'd work so long as I can get it operational. For now, I have succeeded in making a partial wire mess because it's been moved around so many times since I started that it's almost pointless to continue, altough I probably will anyway.

What I want is simple, just diagrams of how those of you who have done it, or know exactly how to do it, of what needs to be done, what flashers need to be swapped and so forth.

First of all, I hate you for beating me to the Spyder Talon conversion. LOL

This is the best explanation I have found yet. The whole problem (as I'm sure you know) is created by the different flasher setups since the Talon uses ambers while the Eclipse uses the entire light. So the idea is to hook up a wire straight from the brake light wiring to the red lights while wiring the flasher (with resistor) to the amber turn signals. Sorry there's no diagrams, but this should definitely help you get in the right direction.

I've done the rear eclipse to talon swap on my 96. The brackets under the tail lights need moved down 1.5". I just got rid of the bracket in the center. The styrofoam is not needed. To make the brake lights and turn signals separate, you need to remove the brake input wire from the flasher and run thy wire directly to the brake lights. And so the turns flash at a normal speed, you need to add a resistor in series with the turns. I got the resistors from vled's for I think around $6+ shipping.

You will need the tail light harness that is in the tail light itself anyway, unless you just want to make your own.

The difference is the flasher (behind the cd player). The eclipse flasher is way different than the simple talon 3 wire flasher (since the brake lights and the turn signals are combined in the eclipse). Most people that i've seen do the conversion, just use the red part of the talon tail light as the turn signal, but this allows you to separate it so that the brakes are in the red area and the turns are in the amber area. Let me know if that makes sense.

As far as the wiring goes, in the Eclipse, the stock configuration has the wire on the output side of the brake switch (at the pedal) go straight to the flasher. When I did the talon conversion, I cut that wire from the flasher and ran it to the tail lights where I connected it to the turn signals.

You will also have to install a resistor so that the signals don't flash as if you had a burnt out bulb. Basically this acts as the second bulb, since the eclipse has two bulbs that flash while the talon will only have one.

This is the resistor I used >>> 6 OHM 50W 2 BULB LOAD EQUALIZER RESISTORS LED TURN SIGNAL BLINKER FIX | 1 PAIR

Thanks Wes, that helped more than all the crappy diagrams I've seen on here. Do you have pics of what the flasher looks like behind the stereo? Or at least which component it is since there's a few that look the same, or close to being the same?

Don't hate though.. I'll let you see it when all is done.

Looks good so far! Are you going to keep the silver paint? Because that would look amazing. Hard to duplicate because it's a true pearl paint job, but would be worth it.

I've never pulled it myself, but here's a diagram. LOL

I will be keeping the stock paint, which for the life of me I can't remember.. probably remember after typing this. Paint code A52. something silver mica. So hard to find a Talon done up in the same shade. Once I get a Talon rear bumper, I'm gonna buy the paint and have the car resprayed. The paint is showing it's age on the back end.

Thanks for the diagram. I'm heading to the salvage yard tomorrow since they claim to have a 2G Talon. Will look for the flasher and probably pull whatever parts I can that may be helpful.

A52 Minden Silver Mica. Same color on my Spyder. It takes a true pearl paint job to get it to match perfect. I did pretty well respraying a fender with single stage paint from automotive touchup.com. But if you want the bumpers to look factory, you may have to go pro paint job.

Ha, forgot the Minden part, knew it started with M though. I will be taking the whole car to a pro. Also having them respray my mirrors and window frame satin black (to match flat tone of the top) and clear it properly.

Here's how my blinkers work with the brake lights on the eclipse flasher unit. Didn't find the talon flasher in the salvage yard today :(

I can take pics of how I did mine. It all works like it did on the talon

still have all the stock eclipse harness and flasher unit. It is not that hard to get them to work the right way

I just ran a breaklight wire from the 3rd break light, and hooked the ambers up to the flashers.

I freaking, love how that Talon looks. Almost makes you wish they came out with Talon Spyders from Factory.

I have a Talon parts car, let me know what you need. :thumb:

The rear bumper... and side strakes if its a 2gb..

I got the center section on now too. Gonna start work on the flashers tonight after school.

Well I got my flasher unit out of the car, but I need to know what wire to cut from the connector and wire to the tail lights. The previous info doesn't state which one to do, aside from the one that connects straight to the brake pedal. There's several connected back there, and I don't feel like ripping it all out to trace one wire. Any help is welcome....

Which wire from these pics?

So, if I can't get an answer to the last comment I asked, does anyone know if I can simply swap in the factory flasher unit from a Talon without cutting any wires from the Eclipse harness and get the Talon tail lights to work? Or will they still function like Eclipse lights?

Well i see you doing alot of lighting work figured you would have one. LOL

There a really good investment, a good cheap one could be had for 30 or so bucks.

I would try swapping the flasher unit and all associated harnesses/wiring before cutting in to the wiring, if I were you.

If I were me, I'd already cut the harness and wire the lights using a multimeter. Not having a multimeter while doing ANY kind of electrical work is like hoping to install a FMIC without a ratchet set or wrenches.

Well as I mentioned earlier this morning, I don't have one yet, unfortunately. I did think about swapping harnesses around and such and tried it, but it's still a work in progress. There haven't been any 2g Talons in the salvage yards here lately either, so no Talon flasher.

I had 2 guys quit at work and have been working a ton. I will get pics of it all this afternoon when i get home at 2

No worries. Very understandable.

There's no way I'll be able to swap a factory Talon flasher into my Spyder without modding the harness. I now got 2 Talon flashers, one I pulled from a Seabring, but they got the same part number. Prior to this, I figured they would be the same kind of unit, just with less wires for the Talon. NOT SO MUCH. It's totally different, not to mention a smaller unit and plug. Will need to hard wire it into the Spyder unless I do it the way tkrPerformance has mentioned.
