While my car is down for a little while, I've been thinking about redoing my interior and stereo setup. I'm currently running a Kicker 8 inch sub (kicker Substation) with an Alpine amp (80 watts RMS). So I've been thinking about making a custom enclosure of sorts while my car is down and out. I was thinking of removiing the spare tire and removing the spare tire cover/trunk floor. I would make a template of the trunk our of plywood (something sront and durable) and putting a free air woofer or making a custom box in the spare tire well and mounting on the new trunk floor. Then, I'd cover it in plexi glass. Anyone else done some kind of custom enclousure in the trunk? I'm tired of the big lunky box and not having access to the trunk from the car (sub's in the way). Anyone with ideas, pictures, etc. I'd love to see them. Take care.

The idea of using the space of your spare tire is good, but there are a few things you need to know before building your box.

1st of all, NEVER use plywood to build a box!!! You need something that's stronger and that will help your sound bounce back in the box, not something that will absord it?!?! Usually, a ¾" thick sheet of MDF (Medium density fiberboard) is recommended. If you would have something more powerful, I'd say, get a 1" thick one, but for an 8" sub, ¾"MDF is enough.

2nd of all, if your sub wasn't designed to be a free air sub, DON'T install it as a free air sub!!! To do such installs, you need specific types of subs which have the required specs to work in that kind of install. Your sub isn't. If you want something small that will give you the quickest response, which the largest frequency bandwidth response, make a sealed box following what the manufacturer specifies for that particular sub. Anything else will end up with poor results. more or less 40% of sound depends on your box. If you don't follow what Kicker says, just think that you might be wasting a perfectly good sub. If you don't have the specs, www.kicker.com will answer you.

Use as much Dynamat as you can handle!!! A little Dynamat never hurts to eliminate rattles...

I was planning on using MDF, just couldn't think of the name and the first thing that came to mind was plywood. As for the sub, I would (design permitting) would use prob. an Pioneer (or another free air sub). I'm not sure if I was clear but I would leave the substation intact and not mess with that. My only concern with a small enclousure would be the construction of it. I think that to design and build one with a subs proper specs would be more trouble than it's worth. The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards a free air design with lots of dynomat in there as well.
