I was wondering what kind of amp would go best with one 10 inch JL audio w7? I want something that will make it pound hard, but not push it to the limits and possibly end up blowing it? What make+model do you guys suggest. I do not know very much about systems and I want to learn... When you get an amp how to you adjust the watts it puts out like if you have a 750watt amp but only want 500 watts of power what do you do? What are the channels for? What's the difference between mono and multi channel and all that stuff. Also does anybody have any idea how bad 1 10 inch sub in a box would affect your 0-60mph time? Would it drop a whole second off or just a barely noticable fraction of a second? Any answers to any of these questions would be very much appreciated... Thanks

What you honestly need to do is go to your local shop. Ask them what you should do. You can adjust the wattage on the amp itself basically. Dont go to circuit city by the way. I honestl ydont know much about amps so id really reccomend going to a local shop. Not a chain store.

This is what I did. I don't know if its right, but the logic seems ok to me. Find out how many watts your sub can take. get an amp that puts out a little less than that number, that way you will never put more power in to the sub than it can handle. As for adjusting the wattage on an amp. There is little knobs on amps to do that. And will it affect your 0-60? I don't know. I assume it would being there is more weight in your car now. Like 97gstspyder said. Go to a audio dealer and ask. They want you to buy something so they don't mind answering questions.

Being I just installed that sub in a friend's system...I have a little experience with it. Recommended wattage is around 500w rms I believe, but it would easily handle up to 800w rms without a sweat. My friend is giving his only 200w rms in a 1.8 cubic foot sealed box, in an Xterra...which turned out to be surprisingly impressive for a single 10, almost as loud as his previous setup of 2 12" IDQ's with 300w rms a piece.

What it boils down to is how much you want to spend. If you're on a tight budget I would say go with JBL or US Acoustics. If you have some mad money, the options are endless. Definetly get a mono class amp though (1 channel). They're much more efficient for high powered subs.

perosonally though id go with MA Adio or Rockford wiht an MA amp....but thats what i reccomend to everyone considering th most successful setup in competitions is Rockford subs with MA Amps

If you have a 10 inch w7 I would suggest to you using the JL Audio 1000/1 Amp just make sure it gets installed by a reputable shop so you dont damage the sub I think that amp goes for about 900 to 1000 dollers as long as you have a shop install it that knows what they are doing you should be ok with that mutch power. But if money is an issue for you or you just dont want to have that mutch power you could go with the 500/1 Jl Audio amp wich goes for about 500 to 600 dollers I think. I had a full JL Audio system I was going to put in my Eclipse before I sold the car so I can get me a Gsx. I still have one amp left that I payed 500 dollers plus tax that i have never installed, I am selling it for 400 its brand new in a box and I am selling it for 400 dollers its a JL Audio 300/4. This amp could run some subs but i would not recomend it for the W7. This is a clean amp one of the cleanest in the market right know, I would suggest this amp for someone who wants to run their mids and highs with this amp. I could answer all your other questions for you but it would take too mutch time but if you email me or live in San Diego I could help you out alot better.

JL is overrated piece....fro my experience.....whihc is extensive with having stuff from diff brands. THe best stuff i have used is the MA competition stuff but whatever yall think.....its your money do what you want

in my old car i had a JL audio 500/1 running 2 eclipse titanium 12's and a JL 300/4 running a JL 3 way component set up front & JL co-ax's for rear fill. all tuning in by an alpine HU. sounded really good...IMO

97gst-spyder....are u asking me?

if so, i never toook my car anywhere to measure the DB. it was pretty loud b/c it was only in a small GTI hatchback. i still ahve the system, but i dont think im going to put anything in my TSi :talon:

i had a single 15 inch MA competition series sub running off a 800 watt MA Amp hitting 143 in a golf a3 chassis with no dynamat!! Im sticking with my MA stuff

143....nice. back in the day i had a 4runner that i had a system in. but that thing was so hard to hit i high DB, since there was so much air space in that truck. the GTi was nice b/c it was so small. my bro keeps telling me to put something in the TSi, but i think if i do it might be a 8" tube or something small. but sometimes i think i wouldnt mind having the system in it. the box is just sitting here staring at me :|

btw, the only reason why i went with the JL was b/c a friend of mine works @ tweeter and he gave me a discount on the stuff :D

ahh...so thats it...i get my ma and RF and a couple other brands for cost...but im still sticking with MA All the way..

but i would like to know what it would sound like in your talon :)...shoud sound decent because of the hatch

actually i might think about doing it this weekend. it's finally supposed to be nice here in MD. although, i need to tune my car b/c it's running too rich right now. :|

That seems kinda low. I have a 15" Audiobahn with only 600w and I hit 144.....not to mention it's in a Spyder. No dynamat either, as if it would really matter with a convertible anyways.

what do you think a 10w7 with 500watts goin trough it would hit in a hatchback gs 99? better than that audiobahn?

If you plan on getting a 10W7, I suggest you first read the specs! The 10W7 is a 500W RMS sub with a nominal impedance of 3 ohms. Therefore, I suggest you go with a mono amp between 400 and 600W RMS. Anything less will be adjusted to its maximum setting which will not be good for sound stability-->more work-->more heat-->more distortions from the amp-->damage to your sub-->:cry: LifeRollsOn...

Therefore I suggest you get one of these. Notice any amp with the same specs will do fine.

Rockford Fosgate Power 500bd (2002);
Rockford Fosgate Power 500.1bd (2003);
MTX 4250D (2002);
MTX 421D (2003);
JBL 600.1 (2001-2003);

By the way, about adjusting the wattage on your amo, you CAN'T!
As for adjusting the wattage on an amp. There is little knobs on amps to do that.
WRONG!!! That little knob doesn't adjust the wattage, but increases or decreases the output of your amp (like volume knob does). The wattage on your amp is continuous at ???W. It can reach peak levels up to more or less twice that number. That varies with certain parts of the song in your music.

About channels, they're just the number of outputs on your amp. A mono amp is by far the most recommended type for a subwoofer. 2 and 4 channels stereo amps can be used with subs OR speakers since they have frequency filters that allow you to have only high or low frequencies playing. 5 channels amps are NOT recommended! 5 channel amps normally have 4 outputs for 4 speakers and one for a sub. Subs ask for a lot more power than speakers, that's why they need their own circuit and own ventilation system. Having the 2 components within one amp is a good solution for space, but not for heat.

If you're worried about your time on track, you should since the little 10W7 weighs 25 itself. + the amp and the box!!! On the street, it will affect your time but you'll still beat the crap out of these Hondas...

If you have a 10 inch w7 I would suggest to you using the JL Audio 1000/1 Amp
too much for nothing...

I suggest you get yourself a capacitor. A 0.5 Farad one will do fine, but if you can get yourself a 1 Farad one, it will be better since having more is better than not enough. Normally, a 1 Farad capacitor is recommended if you have around 1000W RMS of amps in your car, but having more capacitance will save some damage done to your battery and alternator and avoid having your dashlights and headlights dimming everytime bass hits your car... If you can, get yourself one with a digital display. There's no true esential use to that digital except for being cool looking. People always ask about "that big thing with the digital display". You'll impress people. I recommend Stinger. I have a Stinger Super Cap with digital display of 1 Farad.

GET GOOD WIRES!!! Wires are vital to your system. Don't go and buy wires off your local Home Depot! Some companies are specialized and they sell complete installation kits. In your case, 10 gauge wires would be ok, 8 gauge wires is recomended and 4 gauge wires is the BEST! Get yourself shielded RCA interconnects, because you don't want constant buzzing in your sub because of interference. I still recommend Stinger.

HAVE YOUR AMP INSTALLED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER! or else some companies automatically void your waranty... you don't want that...

If you can, get Dynamat; man's best friend. If you're worried about rattles, you could get a Dynamat trunk kit. I suggest you get 2 door kits instead, Reason: more Dynamat+all Xtreme Dynamat. The trunk kits contains some Xtreme Dynamat and some Original Dynamat (complicated to install...), while the 2 door kits only have Xtreme Dynamat (easy to install...). In a sound competition, you can get between 2 to 5 db more using Dynamat compared to a person with the same car and same sound system as yours!!! Now that's a lot!!! dB are though to increase, but are easy to lose. Dynamat will prevent that loss.

Sorry for making this thread so long, but I think you have almost everything in hand to start shopping around!!!

If there's anything, write back or e-mail me.

L8ER! :dsm:

the monkey sure knows his car audio. Out of that list i prefer the jbl 600. i think its a pretty good amp for a simple system. it doesn't cost that much either. i personally like mixing and matching all my stuff and not just sticking to one brand. but that my preferance.

I think they would be pretty even as far as DB's, the Audiobahn might have a slight edge...the JL should have much much better SQ tho. That w7 is a massive sub. Only advantage the Audiobahn has is the price.

If you do go with the 15" Audiobahn sub tho, put it in a 3 cubic foot ported box....you won't be disappointed.

I'll second the JBL 600.1; it's a good, solid, and very affordable amp.

thank you so much monkey eclipse I'm going to audio zone tonight to order my stuff! You really answered all my questions and helped me out a bunch thanks bro!
