hey guys

jus thought id ask and see what the deal is, at first i thought "wing haters" were jus the domestic(read: my car weighs 2 tons and i make 400 hp jus so i can keep up with the imports) guys, but its everyone.

Before you start in, i know there are "ricers" out there that think, oh yeah, a wing will make my moms honda civic go faster, but thats not me, i know a wing slows you down, its more drag, simple physics, and also anytime your are below say 70-80 mph, its not really doing anything(but slowing you down), because the cars are designed to handle well at these "average" highway speeds, but when you travel at a faster speed, the down force on the front of the car causes the rear to "lift" making the car "squirrly" or loose, this is where the wing comes in to play, the down force gives the rear better traction.

now im not saying i drive 100mph+ all the time, but occasionally i like to open her up and jus see what shes got, and trust me, the added stability at 120mph is extremely helpful. once again its not like im weaving though traffic at 100, not that i havent i jus dont make it a habit.

but my point is if i know what its used for and that was my purpous for putting it on my car why does every one have to hate on me like im all rice, forgive me if i like the way it looks, i think its sexy.

ne ways jus tryin to find out why every ones hatin

There are a lot of wing haters. What can you do about it? nothing. It's just something people conform to. It all starts with a group not liking it and dissing it up, so then the next people hear this argument and join in. Whatever, I find haters ###, if you don't like it so what it's not your car. What, you have a right to voice your opinion? Ya sure, but WTF is the point of voicing your opinion to someone who thinks oppositely. Go tell your friend or something.

Aight, personally I like the look of a good wing, but there are a lot of ridiculous ones. I find Wings "almost" always look good on eclipses/supras/silvias, dunno y. But sorry, i think you have your info mixed up. Wings are only effective to the smallest degree with FWD vehicules (unless you really are going fast). They're effective on RWD cars like the supra, just think of pushing and pulling, which ever end is generating the force, will rise.

I still give them a :thumb:, but just get the right ones...there's like triple decker wings, wings with mini-wings, enormous wings, etc.

Anyways, for all of you peope who WILL reply, no I don't have a wing and no, i don't plan on getting one.

:D

hey-g

glad to hear you arent a hater, atleast some one that doesnt have a wing sees where im coming from, as far as my info i'll say it is possible i could be mistaken, ill check the artical i read about it to make sure, but personally and maybe this is jus my mind "feeling" more stable but i notice a difference, as for my style of wing, it is a single wing its called a drop T or T style i believe, the end plate rise jus above the highest part of the "lip" and they drop down about 3-4 inches, used to be silver but the presure washer put an end to that, its aight though, i decided to paint it since aluminium has this really bad habit of oxidising(sp) jus such a dirty alloy, but any way so i got a "shade shifter kit" (read:walmart version of cameleon(sp) paint) and painted it my self. even my dad, die hard, big block, detroit muscle car fan admited that the right combo of car and wing does look good

the only wings I dont' like are aluminum ones. I've only seen one or two that actually look good on a DSM

i like wings but do they really help a fwd car? even at high speeds?

yeah word... consider a fwd car, at high speeds there is still going to be more down force on the front, thus a wing will help, i have seen many a fwd road race car with a wing....
people often confuse the use of a wing between drag racing and road racing, in drag racing unless your runing low 6s meabys a wing is not entirely nessesary on a fwd car, in road racing though wings are essential

personaly i like them if they are the right ones. the curved forward ones look awsome, i have one now that i dont like anymore... the new one will be as wide as the car is which makes a big difference. my $0.02

man, why are you worrried about what other people think...do what you think looks good

I personally hate on wings cause few people understand that you don't need one on yer mom's Honda.

http://www.nwstreetracing.com/SPOILER.htm

There is a short dissertation about the dynamics of spoilers and how/why they work.

Honestly, for OUR applications, they don't really do anything except add to the asthetics of the car. On some DSM's, like G2's they look really nice... but on most other cars, it is pure and simple RICE...

Why do people hate on them? Usually, it is the first step that a rice-boy takes when ricing out his or his parent's Honda. Right before the Altezza tail lights. I think that alot of DSM owners are kinda purists... I think that most of us like original stuff... like take NOS for example... alot of DSM owners consider that kinda like cheating... why? Who knows...

Do what YOU want to your car. If it looks good to YOU, well.. then DO IT!!!

Wings are the first thing ricers get to make their car stand out from the crowd. Wings are cheap and easy to get. You can get an APR GT I or GT II replica off of Ebay for like $49.95. You can install it for $30 or even do it yourself without having to get it painted.

Like what was said before most DSM tuner members are purists and don't like much embellishment or further design to the cars original design that is why most 1st generation DSM's don't have bodykits or you never hardly see them with bodykits.

Only showcar types or Ricer types will ever like wings. I had a wing on my 1992 Talon and I loved it. It was a lot of fun before I sold the car and it helped me get more money for the car when I let it go (with a bad transmission) so....;) in my opinion it depends on what you want out of your car. If you live somewhere where people like wings and you don't get dissed about it so be it. If you live where people do dis on wings you have to live with it and if you want it bad enough you will get it anyway.....other than that let people dictate to you your whole life what is or isn't acceptable.

hey guys,

ill never change or style my car because of popular opinion, and ill agree a wing is most often the first step in any "uncle ben's" car, and i see them all the time, out run them on a daily basis in my 1.8L, what i meant though is some dont like body kits, or big rims, but if you say something bout it they generally dont jus straight up dis you, but you say the word wing and the next word outta there mouth is rice, and to me that is a straight up dis, because im not, im a tuner.

btw, if you are interested there is an artical in the current Import Tuner about the practicality of a wing on a front wheel drive car, page 110. gives a breif explantion of the areodynamic designs of cars and why a wing on a fwd is fuctional.

neways, thanks for the feed back and take it easy

IMO on some cars they just look fugly. I dont know what yours looks like but most 1gs look bad with big wings. I like TomSawyer's wing. I dont know it usually just looks like a park bench on top of someone's trunk/hatch to me. Only reason I hate on them is cause I think they are ugly, nothing more. I know that they are not effective, but then again I dont know if the person has 800 hp (well usually I do) and that is really effective.

One more thing, is the reason you bought your wing for added stability at high speeds the few times you say you go fast? Also what wing do you have? Many like the APC ones and ebay ones are NOT effective at high speeds at all. They are simply for display.

The only wing I have every REALLY liked is the 97+ turbo wing. Ahhhh they look sooo good. Do you think one would look good on my car? In the process of maybe getting a deal on one for really cheap and it is gloss black. I thought it may look really cool because my roof is black..Oh well sorry for the long post, thanks for your opinions.

Generally I think wings on 1G's look bad - especially the aluminum ones. And yet the one I like most is the white 1G from hawaii with the drift kit & 4"~ high aluminum wing... that car just plain looks sweet. The best wings to me for the 2G is still the 97+ talon spoiler & eclipse high spoiler.

The only wings I hate on are the typical riceboy with the missmatched body kit and crappy wing, generally on a Civic or Integra.

I'm a type of guy that thinks anything that improves performance is beautiful. Which is why I love wings on the RX-7's for example (I saw a video of a guy w/o one hitting 100+ mph and then flipping over... a wing would have been a plus for him). But it all comes down to opinions. If you like it, who cares what anyone else thinks. It's your car, not theirs. People who make fun of so-called "ricers" are usually ignorant and narrow-minded. It's like preppy kid making fun of the gothic kid for wearing black, makes no sense, just difference of opinion. Like me for example, I personally don't like the "mexican" (no offense) style of jutting out the rims on cars so they stick out, but I don't hate, it's just they have their thing and I have mine, just as they wouldn't make fun of me for having a "dsmtuners" decal on my rear side windshield because I don't have "Garcia" or "Sanchez" in old english on my back window. So to recap, people who hate on wings are simply those who are too narrow minded to understand that there are many different types of people with different types of taste. To each his own. Duece.

The real question is why you have the huge A S S wing... Whats the point... it not like you race... and need the downforce.... and once again why so god dam n big... I see people with huge wings as high as the roof... WTF... trying to be cool and shit.. and making your car stand outt... these are the real questions.. whats the point..

Because they like it. I'm not saying I do, I personally think they're retarded. But it's like saying "What's the poing in dying your hair?" "What's the point of wearing a cap when it's not raining or sunny?" It's just what they like, pure and simple. And what if someone were to bash me for racing? What's the point of street racing when it's illegal, and the speed limit is so-and-so? To each his own.

rear wheels on a front wheel drive car do almost absolutely nothing
they dont provide power, they dont turn the car, and they are the lesser of the important tires during braking.
why do you need more weight on these wheels?

front weight is infinately more important than rear weight on a fwd.

People do Mexican style or Stunner style or Ghetto style or Lowrider style or whatever style.

People do what they think looks good. Maybe you don't think it looks good and maybe it doesn't for arguments sake, but you can't stop them and it is their car and their money. If yours is better it is good because yours will stand out as the best car.

Most people with a BIG Wing don't race and just want the style of a Import Racer/Tuner car. They don't even understand the concept of Downforce and what not.

I live in an area where guys have Escalades, Suburbans, Yukons, Jimmy's, Trailblazers, QX4's, Land Rovers, and SUV's of all kinds with 20 inch rims, 21's, 22's, 23's, 24's. and I have even seen some Hummers with 26 inch wheels. Why do they do it??? OMG Because they like that sh!t. Who can tell anyone to not get what they like....no one.

If you hate wings and sh!t since you can't stop them from getting it by writing your Senator and getting people to sign a 5,000 plus petition against the sell of wings creating no downforce on slow cars....then just laugh:laugh: get a beer and be glad your sh!t looks better then thiers and nobody can put a wing on yours.

Yeah wings are ok , i hate kids putting 2-3feet high ugly a## aluminum wings on there neon/civic/etc

I hate wings because I think the majority of them are fugly. Is it that hard to understand that not everyone shares your same bad taste.

Neo Racer, I don't think it's fair for you to tell anyone "your bad taste", because it's only bad to you. Maybe to someone else, your taste is bad. Anyways, I'm not taking either side, the best thing I can do is choose not to put an aluminum wing on my car (i'm debating taking off the stock wing and going wingless as it is) because I don't like it. But JJay , I think you worded it best. But all in all, I think this discussion is pretty pointless, because all it leads to it pointless arguing in a subject that will never be settled simply because it can't be. It's like arguing as to whether or not blue is an ugly color. Difference in taste, difference in opinion. Once again, to each his own. Duece.
