So I got bored and decided to shorten my shifter. I was either going to do that or buy a short throw but ive been reading they dont really shorten the lever. So I just did it my own way in about 15 min, and it turned out amazing!

let me know what you guys think!

Yeah it does, im really happy with it and didnt feel like paying 100+ for a stupid shifter. Its not the throw im worried about its the length of the lever. It gives the car a wayyyyy different feel

i wanted to do the same thing and am still most likely going to do it... but i heard it was bad for the... i wanna say synchros. i dont know if i remember right but i heard it was bad for something LOL. and i dont have a clue what im talking about when it comes to transmissions.

how does it feel shifting like that?

i had it shortened on my eclipse but only about 1/2 inch and i didnt really feel a differece after i was done with it.

i wanna shorten the one on my talon about 1 1/2 - 2"s

did u just cut a peice out of the middle of the shifter and than weld it back together? and how much did you take out?

I have my shifter shortened in my tsi. And With underhood bushings shifting is really nice. About to install the shifter plate bushings and things should be really nice.

I dont understand why it would be bad for syncros??

How can it be bad for the synchros?

Anyway I cut I want to say 3 inches? im not sure Ill measure the piece. But what I did was cut a piece off and I drilled out the shifter hole using a 5/8 bit and slammed it back on the lever. Then i took it off again and poured some gorilla glue in there and put it back on and let it sit over night.

yea I was looking into that myself, but I haven't had the time. What does it feel like now? compared to before.

It feels/looks fantastic! Way better imo than any purchased short shifter. I'm going to do this on my 1g. i've heard taht it could mess with the syncros as you could shift further up/down and smash them but that's all heresay and not proven.

Kudos on doing something for yourself. I made my own short shifter too. I actually cut a chunk out of the shifter and welded the threads back on. Then I cut the bottom of the shifter in half (under the fulcrum) and welded about an inch of metal into it. looks a little like this.

Thanks for the input guys. And xsboost, that looks great! I love the new feel. Stock the throws are pretty short, I just hated the lengthy lever. It felt like i was shifting a 18 wheeler. much better now

looks good, i did the same aswell. but wouldnt so much trust that "gorilla glue" holding it together. just take it to a muffler shop after you cut it so they can weld on the threaded part. done.

my tranny was fine. put a short shifter on it and within 6 or 7 months my tranny started grinding going into second.. not quite sure why it happened but my synchros are now bad.. and it blows..

You gorilla glued your shifter? Way do not do it the right way....:banghead:

btw, xsboost did it right by welding it.

i cut my shifter and welded it back together in my 1st gen, the feel is much better. I also machined some shifter plate bushings and that makes a hell of a difference. Can't wait to make some underhood ones also

I would never pay for a shortie shifter, cut an inch or two out and weld it back together, and its almost free to do,

xsboost how is the throw now since shortening bottom part under the fulcrum? that's a very good idea and will give a true short throw

I actually lengthened the bottom of the shifter and shortened the top effectively moving the fulcrum up. The throw is much shorter. here's some pics of 1st gear, 2nd gear, and both just to show how short the throw actually is. The pic of both is a basic cut and paste and doesn't light up perfect but it'll give you a basic idea.

That is an incredibly shortened throw :hellyeah:

okay before you guys all flame me for gorilla glue, it was a little bit and its fine. You dont have to have every little thing professionally done and im not paying someone to weld a stupid piece of metal...seriously. It shifts fine and feels fine better than stock.

and green dsm dude, are you sure u were shifting right? You proly messed up getting used to the short throw, and mine is not a short throw its a shorten lever , it doesnt have anything to do with the throws.

Not flaming.. do you even know what you're talking about?
A throw is the motion you do when shifting.
