I finally got a new head unit and wanted to share my results. I bought the AVH-3100DVD, because for the options you do get, the price is unbeatable. I got it for $305 shipped to my front door. :thumb:

I had a single din radio kit from my last gst and figured I'd make it work. Basically, you cut off the bottom half of the kit to make a full double din opening. I held the head unit in the opening in the dash with the kid mounted up. Then I used tape to mark exactly where I wanted the head unit to sit (within the opening). After using tape to mark up the bolt holes, I drilled through the side of the single din kit and used longer bolts to mount it up. Wired it up and started putting the console back together.

Overall, I am very happy with the looks! :hellyeah: Sound is amazing and the ipod controls through the head unit are amazing. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a double din for a reasonable amount.

Thoughts?

That looks well.

Many of us are familiar with the single din dash install kits.

My advice to future owners who are in the same predicament.. Try to avoid using it.

The best install kit are the STOCK BRACKETS. They are not made out of plastic like the aftermarket ones, so it provides more secure and rigid mounting. Also the headunit does not just lay and drop into place like most if not all aftermarket install kits. You can drill holes on the side of the install kit like the OP mentioned, but again not as optimal as the stock brackets.

The stock brackets accomodates both SINGLE AND of course DOUBLE DIN aftermarket units.

It's FREE (assuming you didn't throw or sell yours)

So your asking.. how bout if I get a single din stereo, I will have a huge gaping hole. No you won't because for less than the cost of the single din dash kit, you can buy a DIN POCKET.

So if you have the stock brackets, hang on to them. And if you can get someone selling a DIN pocket from their RS, GS or any other mitsubishi during our DSM generation get it because it is a direct match on the mounting holes. Be careful when you buy aftermarket or used din pockets, make sure it has the correct holes for the stock mitsu bracket

Fuggin nice. I was looking into something like that. And like red turbo eclipse said. I would hate the extra slot. That's why Im looking into double din's! Will you made it fit but I just hate custom fabs because Im boring and not creative. I checked best buy and they said it don't fit, but of course you show it did. Is there just one size or different sizes for makes and models?

Which one would you've gone with... yours or this one for it's price but lacks little more performance! 7 inch vs 5/8 inch screen

Just one problem.. Mine didn't come with the stock brackets. The person who owned the car before me, removed them and therefore I was stuck using the kit as the mounting source as well. :hmm: It is very sturdy I assure you. I have 3 bolts going through the kit on each side and have it resting on a cross bar with several layers of electrical tape between the cross bar and the head unit. Once you add in the 4 bolts that secure the mounting kit to the dash, it doesn't move at all. You can try to wiggle it, but it's not going anywhere. I would've loved for a simple install using the stock brackets but that just wasn't the case.:nono:

As for sizes, are you talking about the install kit or the head unit? There are millions of install kits but I used one made for the 2g. As for the head unit, double dins can range in size. There was approximately 1/8 inch of space all the way the head unit when mocking up the install.

After looking at the link you posted, I'd still go with the Pioneer that I got. Here's my reasoning. I've had several units with motorized faces, name brands too, and they either slow down over time or something breaks. So I wanted something that was a double din with a screen, with as little movement as possible. The 5.8" screen seems sufficient in our cars.

There is a 7" P4100DVD version but it was $80-100 more and I didn't see the extra 1.2" of screen and sub output being worth it. Also, I wanted name brand. I looked at head units like Boss, Pyramid, Pyle, Valor, etc. But, after reading hundreds of reviews, I couldn't stop going back to this head unit. I want to upgrade my sound system in a big way without spending a fortune. I want to do performance mods and with my budget, this fit perfectly!

Has anyone installed this with the stock brackets. I am interested in seeing what it looks like with the stock brackets as I have them.

Also did you use a harness and just wire everything into your stock speakers and amp or custom wire this in yourself?

There was an aftermarket single din in the car when I bought it. However, the single din kit had broken tabs and the radio itself was lacking in the technology department. So I cut the plug they used and wired up the Pioneer. As for the housing kit, I had one from my GST and made it work.

It looks like it is about the exact same size as the stock unit.

I believe it's smaller than the stock unit because his fit through the snap in trim cover and the stock double din doesn't (Correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while since I've had the double din). There was about 1/8" gap all the way around the radio with the snap in trim in place.

It will work, if anything as mentioned you may notice a very small gap around the entire face. But most double din units come with a trim bezel to cover it.

If the manufacturer of your stereo did not, shame on them. OThers even lower brand names do ;)

As for the harness.

There are several ansewrs to this question.. it depends on your setup. I keep repeating myself allt he time, do a search under the apperance/interior/exterior section under my posts that I have made. You will see the different situations you have.

Damn 2ghiboost... Im so going to buy this unit now. I've checked the other new ones and I like this one more. 303 shipped and new... Why not!
Help me if I run into problems?:D:pray:

The screen maybe small but hey, how tight is our dsm inside anyways. It's not like the person in the back can't see. LOL! Found one for 301 shipped. Getting this next week for sure!

I finally got around to installing this with the stock brackets.

Things you will need to be aware of:

1. It sits a little crooked, enough for me to notice, but I am anal.

2. The gap is hideous and the trim bezel it comes with will not work with our trim piece. No idea how I am going to resolve that.

3. The MITAH cable doesn't work, both the end coming from my amp and the cable are female connectors. Awesome.

I can't comment on the brackets causing it to sit crooked since I used a single din kit and mocked up the unit before drilling the holes.

As for the gap, I did use the supplied trim. It will take some work. I was able to trim the top and bottom using scissors, but you'll also have to notch both sides of the trim so that our trims pieces posts don't hit it when trying to be put back on. The easiest way for me to do it was to lay the new Pioneer trim on the back of our stock trim and trim/notch it to fit. Then set it on the headunit and hold with one hand while putting the stock trim on with the other. Once in place, it doesn't move at all.

Hmm... Would it be possible to notch the brackets and then with the headunit out, put the brackets on and then reinstall with everything already tightened down on the headunit?

Then, before installing the trim, take off the foam around the sides off and clean up the glue residue with some surface cleaner. Then once you notch the trim piece included, it should look pretty clean.

One note, installing the trim piece included will make a minor height difference disappear to most people. I'm anal just like you said you are, so idk if that'll pass your standards.

i just love reading stereo installs, i just put in a kenwood x994 that crutchfield said it wouldn't fit.. it fits LOL..

i like that, maybe ill swap later this year, but not sure, this KW has BT and Ipod cable/Usb storage so dvd's not an issue now. I like it tho, looks stock :rocks:

I have the 3200 DVD and have the same issue with the edge's and not being really flush. On another note the 3200 is the newer version. I got mine of Amazon for $315 with free shipping. For anyone who is looking at them. :)

crutchfield is BS, if the stereo is a "DIN" size, than it will fit. Our opening is DOUBLE DIN or 2 SINGLE DIN.

The problem comes to the FACE of the deck. If it is oversized face, that is where you will have to modify the bezel, or mount the deck out more, but that would be ugly. but if the face doesn't go over the actual din size of the deck,w eather it be double or single, it will mount just fine using stock brackets or aftermarket.

The only thing I can think of is to get some of the feathery stuff like where you put the cd in...and glue/tape them to the inside of the plastic piece that goes around the radio and hvac controls...? I'll have to see if I can find something and try it. :)
