GreenBelt,
oK car audio pros, whats needed to have a system with crisp sound without a ton of base. keep in mind i know zero about car audio. im looking for maybe a little base but nothing excessive. i have just replacement 3 ways in the mustang, and it sounds good but handles base horribly. i guess im looking for a balance of both.

GET AN AMP for your fronts and backs with a high pass crossover, an put in some good coaxials in the back. this will make a huge difference and once you get a sub (i'd recomend a 10 inch sub because they are tight as hell) you can run that high pass crossover on the fronts to get rid of the distortion. also....... how much are you planning on spending?
1 nice ten will give you all the bass you need if you arent plannin on blowing your eardrums.

if you want to blow your ear drums i have a 10w7 jl audio in a box with a 1000 watt alpine amp i want to sell its in y eclipse spyder, id like id like 950 for all of it but my opinion would be the same thing he sad about the coaxials. but let me rcomend for 100-200 for each set the tpye-s and type-r alpine speakers with a good amp. as for subs id recomend the same thing alpine type r 10". but id have twon of them ithink they are 500watts each but not sure then a 1000 watt amp if you go with 2 of them. do not do a bandpass box though. it can tear up your subs with that much power. and f you need the hook up on any car stereo hollar at me

that sounds like what im looking for. what do you suggest for the door and dash speakers? also what size amp will i need if i go with 1 10" sub?

ive got all memphis stuff in my car and it sounds great. ive got 1 12 with 1000 watt amp on it and my stock amp on my highs. for the music that i listen to i dont need earth shaking bass, but rather the sound like you want. you might try going with just better highs and more power on them. you would be surprised at what a compleate set of mb quarts would sound like in your car with the right amount of power :) if you got a good 10 that will handle some power, i would say 300 to 500 watts would be more than plenty if your not wanting a competition level sterio.
keep in mind that a 12 will drop down lower, have a better spl (sound pressure level) and handle more power. they just dont react as quickly as a 10. its all up to you man.

Cool thanks for the input guys. What brand do you recommend for the factory replacement speakers?

just a thought, if your goign for best bang for the buck, image dynamics they handle quite a bit of mid to low base and the highs are crisp but not harsh, they dont make you wish they werent there. I have had sets image, diamond, orion, and infinity. all were components. I will have to say look for something with a silk dome tweeter they wont kill your ears. the image are great 200-400 for a nice set, I ran the orion hcca 6" set sucked, I now have a diamond set and I love them. if your gogin for a really nice sound get a set of kick pannels. and dont bother with havign custom ones done the ones that are prefabricated sound great, unless you plan on compeating then you might as well build your own set or shell out some major cash. the other thing is the am on the fronts its a really big help. take a look at the size of most 50x2 amps compare that to the size of those "50x4" head units. nuff said. if you run a set offof an amp in the front you most likely wont even need to have the rears hooked up, they just draw the sound stage toward the rear of the car. thats not where you want it if you sitting in the front. if you need any thing else just ask

image dynamics are some of the best subs ive ever heard. i havent heard any of the mids and highs, but i used to have 2 12's in my old nissan truck and they absolutly SLAMMED! i had a 1200 watt amp on them and they were ported, so that really helped them alot. my friend had a 128 db camero and i was outhitting him, so i really dont know how loud it really was LOL

there subs are unreal I hit a 142.3 with one 12 in a ported box. sounded like ass in that box but I didnt care abour sound quality at that point. there subs sealed sound unblelevable even there 15's I still have mine in the garadge. you can put them in to a fairly small box too. sealed there jsut about perfect, not to much bass just enough so you can hear the full range of the music your listening to. there very efficent subs 300w on a pair of 12s is plenty, 300 real watts (basicly just a respectable companys rating)

sealed for 1 12 i think the box suggested is like 1.2 or 1.5 cubic feet. i had a bigger box for mine since they were ported. plus with a ported box you can pour more power to them, but like you said, you loose sound quality. i listen to more rock and metal than i do anything, so i really like the sound of a sealed box. the only bad thing about image dynamics is that they are hard to find. audio-n-more.com is the only place that i have seen them at (where i got mine). no local store carry them.
