I bought a used Sony CDX9900, and I went to install it last night and I'm having some problems. First off I'm waiting for my new intercooler so the old one is off so I haven't started the car because everything is open.

I connected all the wires and the receiver turns on but stays in off mode. Off mode being it lights up and shows the time that's all. I can't get it to actually turn on meaning lights up more and shows you radio stations, CD, and so on. So I was thinking well maybe it's doing that because I haven't actually started the car. So I took the red and yellow wires and connected them both and the same thing happens.

Any ideas at all on if it's the installer or maybe the used player is DOA? Thanks for any help guys!

Make sure you plug in Your Antenna wire into the receiver, before you hook up "yellow wire"(memory wire) and see if that helps. You may have already, but did not say you did.

Might sound crazy, but it has to be hooked in first.

Double check all your power wires. Make sure you have 12v on red wires when key is turned on, and 12v on yellow wire, 12v constant, and make sure the ground is connected and working...

Never take for granted the infamous Ground Wire ;)

welp, just tried that no luck and it's a used one.

Do you have a multi-meter to check and see if you are getting a true 12v to power wire and memory wire?

Have you checked the ground? Check it again. Grounds can be a bi***. Before you give up on it.

Haven't started your car in awhile. The battery could be low on juice..

Yeah I'll throw the charger on it for the afternoon, my father has a meter so I'll go borrow his.

Does the Sony have any security coding involved? Also, DSM radios ground through the chassis- you'll need to run a separate ground wire from the frame to the Sony's ground connection.

You might have to install the radio with the parking brake like you would with in-dash screen systems. If you connected the red and yellow, (12v constant, and 12V accessory) you could have overloaded the radio. Uninstall it and let it sit for a few hours. Get the manual out and double check the wiring, I have done it before when I connected the illumination wire as the accessory wire. Everything lights up, just doesn't work. Best thing would be to take the harness apart, and redo it. Might seem monotonous, even though wires are universally colored, that doesn't mean that mistakes happen somewhere else.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm gonna go play around with it a little more, I did have a separate ground right to the frame already. So I'm gonna unscrew that and screw it back down just to make sure there is a good connection, I'll then unhook everything and put it back just to make sure, I'll let ya know how it goes.

Ok,

So I let the battery charge today, went through checked all the connections and put everything back together. The Yellow wire is getting power all the time and the red one is getting power when I turn the car to accessory. One thing I noticed is when I turn the car to accessory the antenna does not go up where in the past it has with a different receiver.

When I hook everything up and turn the car on this is what I get. Just Off Mode on the receiver.

These are the wires that are not connected to anything coming from the receiver.

These are the other connections. The larger antenna plug goes into the receiver, there are 2 other plugs that I'm assuming was a stock changer wire and stock antenna wire? Then there is a small antenna plug that is just hanging around and I'm not even sure where that hooks up.

You need to find a manual for the unit. Odds are that one of the two wires you havne't hooked up is for the brake bypass (green wire) so the unit will display the animated screen or the unit is locked. In either case, it will tell you in the manual what those unused wires are for. Blue is usually the remote amp wire, so it is possible that you have the antenna and this wire reversed, and the orange with white strip is usually an illumination wire, light blue I dont know.

Well,
It looks like I did everything right, except from what that says I have to attatch the light green wire to the parking brake.

I'm gonna go do that now and see what happens.

Perfect, a schematic

Look over the schematic, and you will see that the light green needs to be hooked up to the parking brake, or install a brake bypass switch (1.00 toggle switch). Light blue is for cellular mute. Just out of curiousity, have you pressed the off button or held it for awhile, In the troubleshoot section, it says press and hold the off button for display to resume. Have you reset the unit using the reset button.

Just something to compare too.

What happens when you use a pin and press the reset button on the front of the player?

ok, I went out and attached the wire to the parking brake. Turned the car on, now the radio doesnt work at all and the Anti lock brake light is flashing on the dash. I think Im done for the night. I gotta spend time with the wifey, I'll work on it some more tom night. Thanks for everyones comments and help!

try opening up the cd player and taking an air duster and thoroughly blow it clean! had a sony do the same thing like a week ago!! Just would lite up and none of the buttons would do anything....opened it up blew it out to clean all dust particles. Put it back together plugged it back in it has been working fine since! ( might not be the problem, but dust can get on the wrong part of the board and mess things up a little)

Today I had to install a wire from a stereo to the emergency break. So after I had done that I put the car in accessory and the radio wouldn't turn and the anti lock break light starting blinking. Before I spliced the wire I undid the clip where the emergency break meets up with all the other wires so that it would be easier to splice into the wire. After I was done I clipped the two ends back together. I was thinking maybe a fuse blew or something, but I couldnt see a antilock break fuse.

Why did you have to attach a wire from the radio to the emergency break???? If i may ask.

I doubt the dusting really did anything. However, removing it from its power source probably re-set whatever brains it has inside.
Looking over the PDF, that Sony is weird.
