Speakers for $600-$700?

Here's the deal. I've got $600-$700 budgeted for audio. I'm not looking for subs that'll shatter windows as I roll down the street. In fact, I'm not looking for subs at all. I just want a set of good speakers (I'm assuming all replaced) and the proper support to power them while staying within my budget.

I don't want to relocate speaker positions -- just replace the ones that are already there, where they are originally located.

I like speakers that produce a full, rich sound. Mids are my favorite range as long as it's supported by good bass and treble. I usually listen to music with instrumentals/melody (i.e. Dave Matthews, Sublime, John Mayer)

I'm also looking to keep my stock deck (it's the Infiniti ones that came with the 97-99 GSX's).

You want to do stuff that requires all new components, yet you want to keep your stock deck..

You already hit a road block there.

EDIT, sorry a bit quick to pull the trigger earlier.

First things first, get a damn deck. Even a cheap one. I don't know why you want to keep that crappy 97-99 deck. And for the record the 95s are better! It has aux input for mp3 players and such, and adjustable EQ. Your right it doesn't have a cd player, but who burns just real cds now? Just had to put that for the record.

My beater has very nice sound quality, everything has been changed, 2 amps, rear 6x9s, front components, deck, sub, box. I spent probably no more than $300, on everything. A bunch of no name stuff, but I have surprised a lot of people. People who have knocked the brands that are in there, yet haven't even heard it for themselves or had any personal experiences.

But thats besides your issue.

Getting straight to the point, you want COMPONENTS in the front. I'm not going to mention any brands, because I've dealt with cheap to expensive, and even the cheap brands will satisfy. Thats your call.


If you are going to get subwoofers, you can save money and NOT change your rear speakers. They will serve as rear fill anyways. If you still insist just get some cheap ones.

Now you need an amp to power those speakers.. but if you insist on using the stock deck.. you will need the MITAH adapter so it converts the stock deck speaker outputs to RCAs for your amp. And we are done there.

But oh we have another problem, you will want to get subwoofer(s). Based on the music you listen to, you might be satisfied with just a 10" in a sealed box. Go to the store and see what you like. A single 12" in a vented box is way loud for me and I listen to all kinds of music even hip hop and rap which call for those crazy bass notes. So go to the store and see what you like.

Here is where it gets complicated.. you obviously will need another amp to power the subwoofers, but where are you going to get the signal from because you are using the crappy stock deck, and the MITAH adapter you bought is already being used to feed the other amp for your speakers inside.

1 option, if the 4 channel amp you have has an RCA output to daisy chain, there ya go, the output from the 4 channel amp you feed to the input of the subwoofer amp

2nd option, your subwoofer amp has high level inputs, you tap to the rear speakers and there ya go. I personally hate this way, it just seems messy, and the signal/quality to me is crap, but that might be good enough for you

3rd option, buy a LOC where it taps into the rear speakers once again, but converts it to RCAs to feed to your amp, the LOC usually has a sensitivity control, again its the same as above for me, never satisfied with that.

5th option, you actually spend some money on buying any deck that has 4 channel rca outputs and a separate subwoofer output, and all your problems are solved, and serve for cleaner install and better sound quality due to higher voltage outputs.

Theres other ghetto options, but thats probably the most logical.

I'm into audio, but not car audio so I don't know what to suggest specifically. However, I would recommend you get some 6.5" components for the front, with the woofer mounted in the door and the tweeter right beside the woofer mounted to the door skin. I suggest you don't get anything for the rear, and mute those stock rear speakers. Also mute the dash speakers. You also might want to get an aftermarket deck, as I'm not sure what the quality of the stock one is like. It would also make setting the system up easier.

I have CDT EF-61CF speakers (about $200) and they're pretty good. You could possibly do better with your budget. Get a decent quality amp to match the speakers but try not to overspend here so you can get decent speakers for your budget. You should also consider putting sound deadening in the doors, and possibly a deck, like I said before. I'm not entirely sure what the best way to balance these different costs are, and you may want to save some for later (like the sound deadening or deck), but try to focus on getting good speakers.

Did you read his post? You didn't address a single thing he asked for. He said he doesn't want subs. He wants to listen to music, not over the top bass.

You probably will want a modest sub setup eventually, but you could do without it for now. Just be aware that while the car is running and driving, all the lower frequencies (upper bass and lower mids) seem to get completely drowned out while they're there nicely with the car off. It's what I found with my car, maybe it won't be the same in yours.

Regardless of what your interest of music is, doing a full component install the right way even with no name brand shit is the best way to go. I've had installs just like REDTURBOECLIPSE explains, from RCA ADAPTER hooked to rear speakers and I will tell you its tolerable and you might not care and really like it, but once you hear somebody elses with the factory infinity amp deck and speakers replaced you will want better... Replacing everything including the stock infinity deck will aslo allow you to have full control over how you want your system to respond to your music...

I listen to Rap, Hip hop, Trance, Country, Rock, Punk,... you name it and everything sounds good on my setup... I can have insane Window shattering bass if I wanted or the next day i can listen to Acoustic with tight responding bass punchlines

Your budget will not hold you back from getting brand name stuff as long as you know how to shop... I prefer ebay... i paid around $1000 for what I believe is high quality - high end audio equipment without blowing my pockets...

Im not preaching brands or anything because personally I hate kenwood... but Its got all the features I wanted and does exactly what I want it to do for around $250 (off ebay) while keeping my stock appearance inside the car and not having one of those BS adapter kits for a 1 din cd player... and trust me get an mp3 player if anything... grass is greener on the otherside when you have 150 songs on a disc and can just sit back and scan through your songs without grabbing cds every 15 minutes....

Are the 2 10" subs just the ones that go in the door? I've got nothing against subwoofers, I just won't want a box -- whatever the size -- in my hatch.

The reasons I didn't want a deck is because I like the stock look. All the decks out there seem to be flashy as hell... I'll check out the Kenwood you have.

PSId_OFF TSI, is the setup you listed the one that cost you $1000? It'd be great if you could list prices next to all the items you put down.

I'm not trying to skimp corners. I want it done once and done right... then I can move on to more important things. Like the JIC FLT-A2's...

This WILL sound better then all the systems listed above, if after installing you find that you want a little bit more bass you can always add a sub.
