This question is mostly geared towards car audio pro's. I am looking to replace my rear speakers, I read from multiple sources that you want as little high (tweeter) presence as possible, if any, from the rear speakers. All high's should come from the front speakers. With that being said which 6 1/2 or 6x9 speakers do you recommend to use for rear speakers? Do any companies make speakers without tweeters? Should I still have mids for the rear speakers? Would my best option be to buy another set of 3 way component speakers for the rear speakers and not install the tweeter?

I will be installing MB Quart Q series speakers for the front doors.

Thanks,
-Brian

Rear speakers are for rear fill on a pro type audio setup. The front speaker is the one that you'll hear the most.

It doesn't matter or make a difference with 6 1/2 or 6x9s for highs, 6x9s will give you a little more bass since most 6x9s have higher RMS and db rating.

Yes, a few companies make speakers without tweeters. You could also get regular speakers and adjust the crossovers to where you want it.

As Dgarje777 stated, rear speakers are for rear fill. With that in mind, assuming you will have a subwoofer in your car, you will probably not even hear those rear speakers that much or at all. The soundstage should be up front, with the subs handling the lows, the mid bass speakers in the front from your component set handling mid hz. And the rear.. well just to fill out that section.

I wouldn't spend too much money on them thats for sure. Both of my 2gs have systems, all aftermarket speakers, all 4 channel amps powering them, with seperate amp for the subwoofer. After realizing the rear speakers are not even a big factor, on my uncles system that I installed, the previous owner had some expensive infinity kappas all around, even in the rear. They weren't amped, so when he went to buy an amp, I just told him to get a 2 channel amp for the front speakers, as the rear should be fine being powered by the deck or the stock amp. So thats what I did, the rears were being powered by the stock amp, fronts were amped with aftermarket (since it was a 2 channel, not only was it cheaper than a 4channel amp, it made more RMS power @ 4ohm load). It worked out nicely. Your probably saying, but the stock amp has no adjustability, yes it doesnt, but because of the nature of it being stock, it cannot match up to the power of an aftermarket, so after tuning the system, the rear is just loud enough where it serves properly as rear fill with the front staged amped, and the subwoofer and amp he has in the trunk.

The only time I personally would spend a lot of money on the rear speakers of the 2g, is if there was not going to be a subwoofer. But by the time you get a nice deck, components up front, and rear speakers, you eventually WILL..

Thanks guys for the replies and info. I currently have the Kenwood 717 DVD deck/receiver. I am not going to be installing a sub. I had a 10inch Kicker L7, with a kx600 amp, but I am trying to lighten up the car as much as possible, so I removed them. With that being said, which speakers would you recommend for the rear since there won't be a sub? Do I have to install an amp for the front speakers? or can I just run them off of the deck? I have one of the good old mtx amps I could use for the front, but would rather not if the gains were going to be sufficient over the deck.

Thanks,
-Brian

I would eiither install a set on components, or just simply look for a nice pair of midrage speakers with an rms around 50 watts. That should be more than enough for what your looking for; as well as being able to turn them up and not blow them.

The only problem with the 2 gen speaker placement up front is that your only going to hear sound from the right side while your driving. The doors should be midrange as well, the only true highs your going to have will be the tweeters near the windshield, or if you were to put them higher on the door or in the sail panel.

You can install speakers with tweeters in the rear, or full range speakers. If you set up your headunit with the fade and balance correctly, they will actually help your sound from being muddy. You have 4 channels to work with, tune them correclty and you will hear the difference. If you set everything to 0, than your only going to hear your rear speakers. move some fade to the front, and balance to the left. Try that with what you have first before you decide that you only want your fronts to be highs.

If your car doesn't have the factory infinity sound system than odds are that you don't have 6x9's. Your going to be looking for 6.5's unless you have or can get the 6x9 brackets.

He has a GSX so I will assume he has the factory premium infinity sound system.

I would amp the front, especially if you have aftermarket components. Chances are they are asking for some nice clean RMS power that any aftermarket deck cannot provide. I believe RMS watts on most/all decks from your cheap pyle, to your expensive eclipse are 18 watts x 4.

I cannot recommend any rear 6x9s because I always end up putting a sub. My advice, go to the store and listen to them and see which one you will be satisfied with. Most of their setups are amped so it will give you an idea of how they are suppose to sound.

The thing is, the 6x9 enclosures in the 2g suck. I've heard expensive speakers, to cheap ones, and I just wasn't satisfied with it. Also keep in mind the mounting depth of the 6x9 mounts in the rear are very limited. Most of the high end 6x9s will not fit unless you pound the wheel well a bit or do some other modifications. While your at it, seal up the enclosure better.

You said you are trying to lighten up the car a bit, well, to maximize the potential of your equipment the speakers must be amped. Especially if you are trying to achieve some decent bass from the 6x9s in the rear. So a 4 channel amp with at least 50watt rms x 4 @ 4ohm should help with not having 2 amps to power the fronts and rears, and give you enough juice to make the speakers bump.

OR..... if you insist on not having any aftermarket amps, you can retain your stock amp and have that power all the speakers (i personally think the stock amp still sounds better powering the speaks then an aftermarket deck). Get the MITAH adapter. If you have components and you do the above, you won't use the x-overs included because the stock amp hast he xover built in inside which sends the highs to the dash speakers, but keep in mind the xovers are prob not designed for your aftermarket speaks--so you may not be satisfied with it.

I don't know how you could use the xvoer with your aftermarket components and use the stock amp. Now that I think about it, I doubt you can, and if you could, it just won't be worth it. So its either what I mentioned above, or you can have your deck powering the fronts, but again probably not enough power, and you still will have to do some rewiring (the speaker leads are in the stock amp harness for easy install), and if your going to do that, might as well use an aftermarket amp.

LOL, your probably confused, but the wiring in 2g audio is etched in my head. :)

What I would do based on what you are trying to achieve, get a 4 channel amp, components in the front, whatever 6x9s I feel produce good bass that I will be satisfied with. Tune the amp accordingly. Should serve for good enough sound, producing decent bass from the midrange speakers from the component set and the 6x9s, and having the 4 channel amp keeping the car light weight. At this point you can get rid of the stock amplifier if you havnt dont so already (once you upgraded your deck it is no longer in use). Depending on how big the 4 channel amp is, and how good you are, you can have it mounted under the passenger seat where the stock amp once was, which would be perfect because all the speaker leads are in that very location.

MB Quart sells a few different types of 6 1/2 inch speakers. Could you guys take a look at the ones I posted below and let me know which ones would be the best to go with? I heard the Q series are the best, but are they worth it? Also there are 2 different types of Q series the QSD216 and the QSC216's.
The rear speakers have already been changed by the previous owner to Alpine Type R 6x9's. How much power should I look for the 4 channel amp to give out 4x50?

For the rear speakers should I keep the Alpine Type R's or go with one of these?
