Has anyone tinted their own windows before?
Does anyone know how to tint, the window on the hatchback of 1st gens?

i think those are a little bit harder to do, because you have to use 2 pieces to do it. i would just take it somewhere and have it done if i were you.

it's very hard to do.. you must cut straight, get all the bubbles out and make sure that u piece the back window together correctly since it usually requires two pieces.. i wouldn't do it if i was you, that's why i didn't do mine.. good luck though. if you want some tips on how to do it u can e-mail me. i watched the guys do mine.

yea, usually you can spend the same ammount of money to have a place do it for you instead of doing it yourself and risking messing up, the shop that i know most people go to around here, does all 5 windows for $100. I consider that good since i would need to buy about 5 rolls myself at like $16 a peice and then possibly more if i mess up, unless i buy it in bulk.

First of all let me say that I've searched for similar threads but couldn't find much...

I want to know how many of you guys have done the DIY window tinting... I want to do it for my car because it improves appearance and keeps some of that nasty summer heat out, but I have heard that it's a pain in the @ss to put on.

If anyone has put this stuff on their car (a 1g, I know that a 2g is harder to tint b/c of curve) please let me know how it went, if it still looks good, or if you have any tips.

Probably less hassle taking a $90 hit. Plus alot of them come with a lifetime warranty.

a little off topic but since were talking about tint and warranty i might as well ask.

i got my windows tinted a few days ago and it didnt come out as dark as i'd like. but since i have lifetime warranty, could i just go back and tell them to put on a darker shade of tint?

Tint actually darkens over time. It takes about 2 or 3 weeks to get the full effect. I'd wait before re-doing it. And I seriously doubt they would replace your tint for free. The warranty is against fading, bubbling, stuff like that.

Seriously doubt that you could get that redone under warranty. They are gonna just say "we gave you the shade that you asked for"

i think the proffessionals have huge sheets where they do it w/one. but if you are going to diy i dunno of anywhere that sells it that big..... i'm in the middle of doing mine myself..... and the back window is a pain in the butt i tried and failed at it tonight...... the back side windows are simple and look great 2 1/2% :) and the side windows will be easy 2... i've gotten get a strategy for this... any help would be great..... peace
has anybody done their own?

Do you guys know if most tint shops can remove old tint? I have factory-looking tint right now that is kinda green and I plan on getting 15% charcoal, would hate to have the green show.

If it's factory tint, you can't remove it. If it's just old tint you added, then it can be steamed off. That's the best way to get it off without tearing the old tint and getting most of the old glue off. Before adding the new tint, just make sure you get absolutely all the glue off before applying the new stuff.

steam is going to take forever, and usually won't do the trick
(how many of you guys out there have seen the purple/bubbled/peeling tint on dsms, etc)

6" razor blade, soap, water, time, patience.. get all the old film off first, and the adhesive, all the dirt the tint could possibly EVER touch.

ps... pep boys tint = garbage, sorry to break it to ya. (yes, i do tint windows (in las vegas) )

If you have a special steaming machine, you can directly blow steam on the window and you can peel the tint off in a minutes. Most of the glue will come off with the tint itself. A friend retinted two cars for me using this method. Seems to work pretty well.

i was thinkin about getting my windows tinted over the weekend and i was just wondering how you guys got it for?? :dsm:

Most places I have priced out wanted $199 out the door. I got mine done cheaper than that though by bringing them 10 cars as a package. $90 per car.
