I know this piece of sheetmetal (circled in picture) is there to support the back seat and provides a space to mount the rear speakers, but does it also serve to keep the rear rigid? If it was to be removed would there be any negative side effects?

If your cage would have went to the rear towers you could have removed it.........If you where to connect the towers with some cage tubing you could remove it......

I removed it in my old talon rally car and all such stampings are now removed from the Galant VR4 I am cageing right now.......

This is a TYPE R rally car that I just finished the cage in yesterday..... it has no such supports as the cage provides all the strength needed.....

you can always take it out and weld a pipe across from the mounts of the strut towers
 
I'd leave it, and triangulate a couple of bars under it, then one across the top...

why remove it? it's not "in the way" and if you ever need to put the seat in to comply with changing class rules you still can.

btw, the picture i posted wasnt of my car, I just used it as an example :D


I do plan on getting a cage that tied the towers together. So i went ahead and removed it today... What a pain in the ass, over 60 spotwelds :notgood: anyway, It cleaned the back up a bit. My original intention was to remove it for the weight savings (as minimal as it was) since i do plan on dragging the car quite frequently. But, I also plan on driving the car on the street so i didnt want to sacrafice rigidity. Seeing as how i plan on running a cage im not too worried about it. Just wanted to see what other had to say.
