Yesterday me and my friend installed another amp in my car. I already had my rf 4-channel in there so we decided to put in his scoshe p.o.s. amp. Apparently the power wire he had didn't have a fuse in it so when i turned the stereo on it got really hot and started to smoke. I turned it off and looked for a short or something but couldnt find any. Well i hooked a wire with a fuse to the amp and it doesn't turn on at all now. I checked the ground and remote wires and they were both fine. I'm pretty sure it fried something in the amp. Can it be fixed by me or am i going to have to by a new one?

you can send it to someone who fixes amps but if its a cheaper amp i wouldnt worry with it.. u fried it

i know someone who started a car on fire because of wiring on a cheap amp/not knowing what they were doing/ leaving the battery hooked up while doing wiring. I wont mention any names because that person reads the board (although I dont think they post ever)

anyways, as stated, you can send it away to get fixed, but only do this if its a quality amp and worth the price of fixing. for example, sending a 100 dollar amp away to get 90 dollars worth of repair done = not worth it (just throwing numbers out there)
and if you do get it fixed, use a fuse before reinstalling it, and double check your wiring before you send any power anywhere

the p.o.s. amp is my friends. Mine is the one that got fried and it cost $450 so it's better if i can get it fixed.

Another question, i tested the transistors that transfer the heat to the outside of the amp and the transistor tester said that they leaked. I'm not absolutely sure if the tester worked properly but if it did could that be enough to keep the amp from working?

I tested two different transistors yesterday which my electronics teacher thought might be there to protect the circuit instead of having a fuse do it. Do amp makers do this or is he full of it?

Many amps do have a protection circuit. But usually you get some kinda sign that its entered that mode (LED color change..etc). If the amp is just flat out doing nothing, then its busted.
