Just wondering if anybody out there knows how to allow the fog lights to be turned on with the headlights being on.

Try www.vfaq.com, they have the 2G write up, not sure on the 1g though. Also, I did this mod to my 2g and blew two seperate fog lights before I removed this mod, it worked but not well. After I removed the connecting wire, I found it was burnt with some melted plastic coating, not sure if it was touching another fuse or what, maybe someone could explain?

thanks for the help guys, that site has some good information on it. Now, I have a followup question to my original. Instead of doing all that rewiring and jumping, why can't you just disconnect the power supply that runs through the headlights and give the foglights their own power?

On my car I ran all new wiring for my fogs and used a non oem fog light switch (also aftermarket fog lights) and ran the power so that if I WOULD leave the fog lights on, they would shut off when I turned the key off, but still had full controll of them while the car was turned on. Basically the vfaq way is the easy way. I did it the harder way but have the same results, and i feel safer with it this way rather then using jumper wires

as a side question if u did this mod theyd stay on with the highs too right well were not allowed to have that in pa so since my car didnt come with fog lights or wires heres what i think will work what u guys think i know it works b/c i tested it but should i have probs with it lasting or meltin shit?

relay #1

86-switched source from park lights
87-to pin 30 on relay #2
87A-unused
85 ground
30-fused constant power from battery

relay #2

86-highbeam circut
87-un used
87A-to fog lights
85-ground
30-from 87 on 1st relay

i know it works because i "bench tested it" and its the only way i can come up with to be able to have them on without the headlights but go off with high beams

what u guys think before i go and wire it in in my car?

hmm never knew it was illegal in PA... you'd think if your high beams are on, why not the fog lights too? Not like your blinding anyone. oh well i'll probably wire them up so there always on anyway. :D

That's what we get when laws for people who drive are written by people who don't. It's illegal to have the fogs capable of working by themselves, without the headlights on- obviously, these dorks have never driven in either truly heavy fog, or in falling snow.

Lucky for the lawmakers we're so many generations down in this whole regulatory purgatory with cars. They'd love to have this kind of control and taxation over everything we own. Bah, soapbox.

Anyway, just run power to the foglight relay, and put a switch on the ground terminal of the relay. Power for the lights goes to the switched relay terminal, to the fogs, to ground. Fuse both supply wires near the supply.

Typically, the law is "in the books" - usually, the majority of districts will read that on-road legality is strictly limited to a total of 6 lighting units up front, with max. of 4 units lit at any one time.

Whether or not officers choose to ENFORCE such rules, however, is totally up to that individual, and very often has to do with both enforcement practices in your local area (i.e. targeting of Sport-Compacts or Musclecars in certain places) as well as exactly what your situation might be (i.e. OEM 1Gb high&low plus fogs will look like a total of 4 lights ignited, and typically isn't all that bright anyway LOL! -vs- a 2G w/aftermarket projectors, HIDs, and, say, a full off-road rally pod engaged).

Determine what the attitude for enforcement is in your area and your immediate surroundings (i.e. your normal commute to school/work/meets/etc.). And if you go on road-trips that cover a lot of distance, just play it safe and smart.

That is why the Vfaq had you wire it to an alternator trigger wire... they would only light when the alternator was spinning. But you take it a step further and run the alternator trigger wire to the fog light siwtch to kill the relay signal at will.
IE leave swtch on, thay run with the alternator. Turn off, they stay off.
