my car is rusting up near the strut tower like many dsms are. well today my friend poked the rust spot and his finger went through it..theres a hole 2 X 2 near the strut bolts itself. did anyone fix this themselves or is this a strictly body shop sort of deal? how much did it cost you to get it cut/welded? is it even possible?

if you want it to llok professional then go to a shop...but if your looking to just fix it yourself..knock the rust off of the area...get some shim stock and make some reinforcement bars and weld them around the area that is in question and then paint it with some autozone antirust primer

its rusted completely through it. theres a hole. i need that welded up right? i think it needs to be cut around, ground down, and welded up. how will bars around it fix the hole?

you misunderstood me...use shim stock...usually comes in 10-20 foot section about 1 inch * 1/4 inch...cut it into strips and weld the stips over the area the hole is in...the hole will be covered over by 2 or 3 strips of new metal...

the alternative is gettign some sheet metal and cutting the area around the hole out in a square then find a similar gauge of sheet metal to the thickness of the panel your replacing and cut it so that it will fit into the square you just cut and then mig weld that new section in makign sure you have full penetration, or creating a "bead" of weld metal on both sides of the sheet metal your installing..this is the better method, but its also a little more difficult if you have never used a welder before. once your done, grind the weld flush and paint it over and you shouldnt be able to tell that the repair was ever made.

thanks for the link, and thanks for the advice. mine is nearly as bad as that one guys..god that was bad. well thanks again. looks like i got some work to do this week

Hey I have the same problem. I tried that link and it doesn't seem to be working anymore. Does anyone have a more recent link or more new info on how to handle this problem? To the OP: how did you end up fixing yours? Before and after pics? Maybe a step by step on how you did it would be awesome! I'm a delivery driver and use my car everyday 150 miles. Need it for work. Thanx
