Ok, so this is the deal. I plan on getting a(yes one) subwoofer soon. The thing is though, I don't want this one sub to sound like shat in my 1g. So what I want to do is build it into the rear hatch cover facing up towards the glass of the hatch.

I plan on buying a Power Acoustik FUBR Series 1800-Watt 10" Dual-Voice-Coil 4-Ohm Subwoofer powered by a Power Acoustik LT-Series 980-Watt Bridgeable 2-Channel MOSFET Amplifier with Bass Boost. First, do you guys think that would pound ok? I want some good bass but I don't need anything that will blows girls clothes off or something competion grade.

Also, I know there is a guy on here that did something similar to what I want to do, but I forgot who.

The thing is, I want to use the stock cover, or atleast the shape. Feeling the backing of the stock cover it feels pretty sturdy. Do you think it would hold a single 10" sub fine? Of course I'd run the wiring under it and under the seat's n such. But do you think the idea of using the stock hatch cover would be ok?

And comments or ideas are welcome. Also I feel I sould add that I'm 16 have never done this before, and know absolutly nothing about car audio. But I have older friends that do and one built competition systems for 6 years.

if you plan on cutting a hole in the hatch piece and sticking the sub in, it will sound like shat! There will be too much air escaping. You need an eclosure. you can build a small box for it if you like, but I strongly sudgest you not use the hatch piece. I love a lot of bass, so I have 2 Orion 15" subs in my car and I'm building a custom box for the trunk this week. Good luck though!

I had the similar idea but i rebuilt the back lid out of MDF board and plexiglass to hold two 12" subs. Here are some of the older pics, noe the wrinkle in the carpteing is gone and there is also a CD changer under it witht he amp. But when I took my hatch cover out to make the template, it seemed kind of flimsy. My looked and felt like the stuff that is like carboard mixed with, like the peg board material. I'm not sure if that would be the most sturdy material to put a sub in ecspecially with all the vibrations and thumps. You could reinforce the bottom w/ some stronger material, like 1/2" MDF board and just build a little frame on the under side of the cover. Anyways, here are my pics:

That's the car I was thinking of! Thanks for responding 93 Talon Boy. Maybe I'll just rebuild mine out of 1/2" MDF board and cut it for the single 10" sub and carpet it. Do you think it would sound like shat like Aurora-Hybrid says? Just curious cause you said yours sounds good. Thanks for the replies.

:edit: oh, and how much was it for all the materials for your set up 93 Talon Boy?

Andrew, there are so many guides here on the web! Hopefully, some of the suggestions you've received already will make a lot more sense after you do a little more reading.

Is this your speaker? http://www.cardomain.com/item/POWFUBR10
As it says, "Free Air is not recommended". Like you've heard already, you'll need an enclosure. (Is that amp 1 ohm stable??)

A few sites you should peruse:

www.bcae1.com He covers some basics of subwoofer enclosures in #110 of the right hand menu. There's a plethora of information in that site!

http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/S-HAnTyh1CVr3/reviews/20030701/build_box.html?page=1

http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxes.asp

Also do some searches on speaker impedance and "bass boost".

No prob for responding. But rebuilding it with 1/2" MDF is probably a better move liek you said. For your sub, I'm not sure how yours would exactly sound. Like I said, I have two 12" subs and they sound great how they are. Mine have been in for quite some time now too and I haven't any problems, and I have my amp and 10-disc CD changer under there with them. So like you said, you don't need anything like competition setup or insane, just nice sounding. That is a nice sub and shold give you what you are looking for, but it was designed for "small enclosed areas". However, I don't think it should make a massive difference seeing how you aren't showing it or anything and it is covered and everything. Just as long as crap doesn't get in it, I say that would be fine, but I am not the audio expert , but I know some. Good luck :thumb: Any more questions?

I really like the idea of having the sub built into the hatch cover, or a remade one atleast. So I think I'm going to look into other subs. Of course, I COULD get two 12's of the same kind for $60 a piece. Do you think that would work ok? Or should I just look at other subs?

And thanks for the sites Chuckster, looks like I have some reading material for when I get bored! And yes that is the sub I plan on getting. I have no clue if the amp is 1 ohm stable.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1072286177806&skuId=6272829&type=product That's the amp I planed on getting.

adversary, yes. Similar to that only the subs pointing up.

I've found new subs.

http://www.cardomain.com/item/KENKFCW3009

They are cheap, compatible with free air usage, and will pound just fine for me. I am only getting one. I also plan to get a Kenwood 1000watt bridgable mono amplifier.

I hope you don't mind if I kinda copy your set up there 93 Talon Boy

The best way to utilize the harmonics of the hatch back is to set up the subs facing the rear of the car. The more you turn the subs toward the front of the car the more of this effect you loose. I mean hatch backs are the best thing when it comes to bass. Take an average body car with the same system and put it up against a hatch back and the hatch will always seem louder. Make that work for you and point that bad boy to the rear.

I had 2 12" 300 watt AudioBahn subs pointing towards the back at one time, then they got stolen. But they made the hatch rattle BAD. I plan on getting the hatch Dynamatted(sp?). But I just like the idea of havin the sub mounted in the hatch cover. IMO it looks sweet. But if this doesn't work out I'll probably just get a box for the 2 subs I originally wanted and point them to the back. I donno yet. I got a month or so before I get the sub(s). I'm just exploring the options. I'm getting an alarm and keyless entry, then new speakers since the stockers are blown, then a cd player, then the amp and sub(s). And I get a fatty discount on everything since my mom works at Best Buy.

wel my 1g is ghetto, I dont have the hatch cover.... What I did for my type R 10" was to remove my spare, and build a 1.1cu box that fit that space. it ended up sticking about 2 inches above my floor with the sub firing straight up. I used expansion foam topped with a 1/8 inch thick piece of plywood to make it all even and laid my factory carpet on top. cut the hole inthe carpet for my sub and mounted it. sounds great, hits hard enough to shake out your teeth, and I can still fit a collapsed double stroller in my trunk.

That was my biggest concern. I have to still have use of my trunk. Ill put pics up tomorrow if you want. its to dark right now to get them....

That setup should be nice, good choice. Haha and no problem about "copying my setup" its not like i have it trademarked. It should look, but send me pm's if you have any questions or anything because I obviously did that whole build so I knwo how it all works.
