I bought these rims a while back and have them on my car and I bought them used to they had a little curb scrap. Nothing that tore into the whel just took the finish off. I was wondering how many coats of black paint and clear and stuff like that i need to put on to make them look nice. Im gonna use a spray gun at my uncles auto body shop so it will look nice. And if it does and some of you like it i could do the same for you very cheap.

When i painted my rims I took all of the finish off first by using aircraft stripper. Then about 2-3 coats of sandable primer. 3-4 coats of paint. And like 2-3 million coats of clear coat. They came out great. I don't know what color you are doing them, but if black or really any other color for that matter try and keep the polished lip. It looks real nice. Good luck.

i dont think painting rims is goin to last too too long. powdercoat will be much much better for that

Painting them will be fine as long as they are prepped right. Some factory GM cars have painted rims along with what I am sure many other companies. Duplicolor makes paint in a spray can that is made for rims that I used with mine and they turned out great. Roughly 8,000 miles later they look just as great as the day I painted them. If you are using a gun though I bet they will turn out even better. I did about 6 coats of paint but I am a little excessive sometimes and 4 coats should be more then fine if not 3. I would recommend about 4 coats of clear. Good luck and post pictures after they are done.

yea, and no. paint is surface. its kinda stick on. powdercoat melts into the top layer of the metal and diffuses with it. its much stronger. doesnt chip like paint, doesnt really fade. its better for all year around with salt and snow and dirt. easier to wash. doesnt scuff or lose luster like clear coat. plus if some nasty stuff gets sprayed on it on a road, like spilled fluids, it wont eat the coating like it can eat the paint. you never know whats on the road when u go by it doing 70 on the highway. powdercoating is just much much more durable and stable, i think.

Hmmmmmmm, 5 bucks on duplicolor, or 500 on powder coating?
I'll have to sleep on it, LOL

I just recently did my wheels on the 240 in graphite, and they look awesome. I bought 1 can for five bucks, and it gave me 3 layers of paint on all four wheels. I should have bought some clear but I only had 3 more bucks on me. I made sure to put the third coat on really thick cause they were looking too metallic, but with out any clear coat, and one really thick coat they still look glossy.

As for salt and chemicals wearing the paint off, it says right on the bottle that it is resistant of all the shit you may run over, so, I figured I would save 495 on this one.

Besides if and when it chips, or fades, 5 bucks and they can look like new.
