1G 1g engine cooling, hood/bumper cutting thingamajig (idea after greyforestgst's hood)

For 1gs that have those little decorative pseudo-ducts (see red circles in pix) why can't we use a dremmel or something and actally cut all the black plastic out and make them allow air into the engine?

If you open your hood and look behind that black plastic "facade" the structures behind what you would cut actually have a slight angle to them that would direct the rammed air slightly up to allow it to go over the radiator housing towards the engine.

I figure if you do that "mod" where you elevate the closed height of the hinged end of your hood with thick nuts or extra washers (the theory that it creates a reverse ram air scoop allowing hot air to be "pulled" out towards your windshield) and combine it with the cutting out of this space, air would flow through quite nice.

Or, would it flow so nice, it might create an updraft and rip your hood off?

Just a thought.

Discuss.

You won't get any flow out of the hood and over the windshield. The base of the windshield is one of the highest-pressure points on the whole car, after flat against the nose.

Go to Wal*Mart, get some yarn and a roll of masking tape. Tuft the front of the car and have someone film it at a few different speeds. I'd bet you find because of the shape of the front bumper that you get no airflow into those nostrils above 35mph. If you want to vent out the top of the hood, you might get some venting out to about halfway back along the hood- after that, the pressure area from in front of the windshield may well reduce outflow to near nothing.

Most of the air heading into the engine bay escapes out the bottom of the car, between the chassis and the roadway.

MG-As had nice little vents on the tops of the fenders, about a third of the way toward the nose from the windshield. It was a shock to the designers to find that at speed, air was drawn down into them instead of up and out as they'd intended. However, vents of that sort do allow hot air to rise out when parked.

Damn, just when I thought I could come up with a design that would make me famous like greyforest and get 9000 views.

Well, I won't give up on the 1g version yet.

I guess this could be the "official" Greforestgst's hood vents for 1gs thread.

Thanks for the input, I sill remain ignorantly hopeful.

I actually thought of this idea a week ago, I was talking to my buddy with a 1G about it because I just got my 1G last night... and was thinking of some free mods. We both concluded that it wouldn't really do anything.

??

Have you tried it....? I don't understand.

ya it looks like he has tried it....

hmmm...im thinking of just cutting a huge ass hole in my hood then getting one of those "duct tape supercharger" things off of ebay and cut the bottom out of that and then slap some jb weld on the sides of that bi*** and cold-weld it in the big hole...

that would work wouldnt it...

Dude my 91 already has the crap cut out its got like mesh so DSM did it for us :thumb: u just got screwed after 91. just get one from the junk yard if u reall want one.....

That would be a bad name for it - it's not even in the hood :). Why don't you call it the bosljeff grille vent mod. Anyway, I agree that it probably doesn't do much. With the thought Mitsu put into all the ducting (both the rad and IC are well ducted) on the front end of the 1g, they probably wouldn't have overlooked that as a source of more cooling.

Here are my 1g vents. Had to cut into the hump just a little bit, but the mesh should go in just fine. The work on the hood is still in progress. :thumb: :laser:

Not bad, not bad....

I dunno if it works like it does on the 2G...I have 97-99 Eclipse lights, and the 97 talon bumper (so I have about a 1inch gap) and it does help with engine temps very slightly, it's nothing major unless you're a temperature nazi :p personally I think they should be open just because it helps the appearance alot :) :thumb:

I believe Supergoat did that.
Might want to PM him and see if he can post a write up about it.

Well, fwiw, I finally did do it and have no way of measuring underhood temps. It wasn't too hard at all. I did end up dremmelin' those 'ducts' out and at the hinge of the hood added longer bolts with bigger nuts (so as not to use the 50 washer spacer method) to create the space. Who knows? I'm sure a much wiser person than myself could point out how this could actually hurt me somehow, but until then it kinda has a unique look with the angle on the hood and I like to (ignorantly) think that this 'mod' does something....

Thanks for the discussion all, keep it up.

Ah, another good reason to own a 91. You can actually just remove that piece between the headlights on the older ones. You definately get more air flow coming through where that grille piece is. Then removing that piece of weather stripping (did that as well) on the back of the hood, it might flow through.

Will it change anything, probably not.

just got pics of the finished product. enjoy!
