I am hoping to enter a SPL compatition in august, i am about to get 5g's so i wanna have a bad ass system. so i need to know what everyone thinks is the best subs. want two 12s and then awsome amps.

I am a jl audio man so I would say 2 w6v2s or 2 w7s with a jl 1000\1 powering each. I have 3 of the old school w3 12inchers in my gsx and it is defeaning but clean. But I wont lie the kicker squares are nice too.

thanks.....i just wanna have the best bass i can get!!! i want jl 13 w6 but they cost so much. alipines are good kinda looking at there best ones.....just want bad ass bass!!!

ive had bad experience with jl before, but from what i hear, the w7's are crazy loud/clean. other than that, check out some memphis stuff, LVS subs, m-class amps.

I used to have an integra GSR with two 12" Eclipse Titaniums in a ported box tuned to 32hz, each hooked up to their own mtx 81000d. All 0 gauge wire, 2 audiobahn digital chrome 1 farad capacitors, etc... that setup was CRAZY LOUD!!! Those subs go soooooooo low, still very clear at the same time though. Eclipse makes some very high quality products. I would recommend either the aluminum, or titanium subs. Every single person that ever heard tha setup in my car said it was wayyyyy too loud, but i liked it :thumb:. If you don't like Eclipse go with the Adire audio brahma, its better than the W7, and CRAZY loud as well.

JL Audio is overpriced and overrated. Resonant Engineering all the way man. The SX, XXX, and MT are all super loud, with the MT being the loudest. Its a damn beast of a sub. You can also check out Treo, MMATS, etc etc

go to Reaudio.com for more info on RE subs, and termpro.com for spl anything.

i had 2 15 inch ground zero "nukes" in my car for about a year and it was capable of making my pregnant girlfriend vomit LOL. bad thing about them is sound quality is poor, they require alot of airspace, and a ton of power. im running a pair of memphis 12's and a 1000 watt memphis amp now and i couldnt be happier with the sound quality and spl both. it really depends on what you want more. if your going for all out knock the breath out of you bass...i'd say ground zero hands down.

to win spl comps you're gonna need bigger than 12s - go with at least 15s - the best for competitions are cerwin vega strokers - i used soundstream spl160s when i used to compete and i did very well with them

80% setup, 20% equipment

you don't need 15s to do well

Image Dynamic IDMAXX...Cheaper than any high end sub and crazy ass loud. and Tru Amps...or Zapco.

Go with Eclipse stuff, its pricy but well worth it. I have a 10" Titanium sub, 2 6x9's, 2 6.5's all eclipse and it sounds crystal clear....very loud but clear.

I'll say Cerwins are good and loud. They are good for price, but are a little muddy to my ears.

I'd buy some Elemental Designs K or O series depending on what your plans are. Competition grade all the way, loud and hell but crystal clear. You'll not touch this quality for the money IMO anywhere else.
or if you got the cash do the JL W7s..if not do the EDs.

Oh yeah, and make sure the box faces towards the rear of the car. At least I found this to be far louder than other positions hands down to my ears.

Well, here are some common ones, in no order:

RE XXX
JL Audio 13w7
Cerwin Vega 18" Stroker
Audiobahn flame compression series
Kicker L7
Kicker SoloX

I have played with all of them, and all are loud and have good and bad points. I'm a classic, old-school man, so of course i would go with the cerwin-vega stroker simply because it's a proven design that i like. Don't let me influence your decision, and don't limit your decision to this list. Do your research and make your own decision.

REMEMBER:

90% BOX
10% SUB

A great sub won't be loud in the wrong box.

I agree, as anyone in that works a lot with car audio equipment that too much emphasis is put on the speakers. If your comparing speakers that are "of the same class" 90/10 sounds right to me. In general I feel its more like that 25% speaker, 50% enclosure, 25% placment/cabin acoustics. I just want to cry when I see people spend a bazillion dollars on good speakers, slap it in a box they picked up at the same store that is nothing more than a standard box they sell to anyone buying that size speaker. On top of that they are usually made of light, crappy, thin MDF..or even particle board if its really cheap. :barf:

I've personally hand built every enclosure I've used to speaker manufacturer specs(I usually pick my own tune when porting). It does make huge a difference.
:barf:
