I much prefer to use a small ball-peen hammer and work the raised portion back into the dented area.
Use a wire brush on a drill motor so you can see your progress and knock off any sharp edges. Depending on the damage 5-10 min each piston, use lite blows, your not trying to bash anything or drive a nail in wood.
This way you don't remove anything, you don't change the balance and you have essentially forged the aluminum back into place by peening. You don't want any sharp edges for you can get hot spots which can cause pinging.
