ok i have a mechanical oil pressure guage for my 91 tsi awd and i know the general area to tap into just not the exact place, all i know is, is that its near the oil filter, other than that i cant figure out what to tap into, so if somebody could help me out here it'd be nice, thanks

GLADLY - for starters the STOCK oil pressure sendimg Unit & Gauge has been well documented to deliver good service for 14 - 15 freaking YEARS! THAT = a good part - THEREFORE you replace it with a PROVEN stock part - NOT A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SYSTEM!

SECONDLY - Those of us who are old enuff to remember when we had no choice BUT a mechanical Oil pressure gauge remember the freaking MESS it made in our cars!

THIRDLY - It should NOT take a rocket scientist to figure out that 100 psi Oil INSIDE THEIR CAR is NOT A GOOD IDEA - but somehow we get this DUMBASS THREAD about Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauges EVERY FREAKING WEEK!

FOURTHLY - We DO NOT have a NON - MECHANICAL Oil Pressure Gauge problem with our DSM's... The STOCK sending Unit & Gauge are one of the FEW THINGS on these damn cars we can count on.. WHY NOT spend your efforts on one of the myriads of parts we CAN"T count on?

Originally posted by Omega I have the autometer FP gauge... works great. I don't see why the oil pressure wouldn't be sub-par.

I'll bet $100 via paypal to charity that Omega doesn't have a Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge in his car.

i just installed an autometer 0-100psi mechanical oil pres. gauge. heres my situation.... i have 10w 30 synthetic oil and a crappy filter. at idle i have about 10psi, sometimes a little lower. then as my rpms go up, i have about 20psi for every 1k rpm, for example, at 2000rpm i have 40psi, at 5000rpm i have 100 psi. also there is a whining sound coming from the gauge. i ran copper wire, and took out the stock sending unit in the oil filter housing, and screwed the 1/8" npt in there. it's a 98 gst. this seems like low oil pressure at idle, but too high, higher in the rpms. any thoughts????

okay. i'm not trying to start an argument here, but seriously, are you trying to say over 100psi. is normal??? that sounds insane, iim not saying you're wrong, or dumb, its just that i've never heard that high for any car being normal. can i get some second opinions please?

The oil pump in our cars rev as fast as the engine does and therefore at higher RPMs you will see way higher pressures. I've seen honda's that go up to 120 PSi when they run into VTEC.

A year ago, I modified my pressure relief valve to supply less pressure at 7k RPM because I thought that 120 psi of oil pressure was causing my turbo to burn oil. This is when I measured actual pressure at the cylinder head and the pressure there never exceeds 20 psi.

My engine, with the BS removed, will make 100 psi at 7k RPM on a warm engine with the relief valve unmodified. Pressure will hit 115 psi on a cold winter day at 3k RPM when the car hasn't warmed up yet. I have yet to have problems with the oil filter backing off due to too much pressure.

BUCK: I believe Tanner261 on the above...

He bought the wrong Gauge - appears it's a common error.

& BTW anyone who mounts a Mechanical Oil Pressure gauge inside their car is NUTS! (& I'm being kind)...

FURTHERMORE - There's not a damn thing wrong with the Stock Oil Gauge setup - why not Mod something that NEEDS modding?

STARR: i broke it when i had my dash out

You'd have been far better served to replace the perfectly good Stock gauge you broke with a Junkyard gauge or at least research the required Gauge Range requirement.

also there is a whining sound coming from the gauge

"Pegging" a Gauge is bad for the Gauge & can result in faulty indication - which is NOT why we have Gauges. Not trying to be a prick here but this Thread COULD keep someone else from embarking on a compound fu** - up.

I just got me an oil pressure gauge. If I take out the hex screw that needs to be removed to put the hose fitting in will oil come pouring out and make a mess?

- HOT 100 + psi OIL inside your car.
- You depend on the rinky-dink fittings & tubing they supply.
- The quality of your installation comes into play.
- Not to mention having to bleed the thing.
- It's a disaster waiting to happen.
- And yes - Many years ago I had one in a car - Never again.

does anyone know what size of a fitting the good pressure tap is?i got one of the autometer kits but it doesn't look like it will fit there looks just a hair to small,or is there another place to tap this.thanks guys.

The advantage of a mechancal guage would be 270 degrees of sweep, only the more expensive electronic guages have that kind of accuracy. Mechanical guages are not safe as mentioned above, usually mounted on the hood of the vehicle.

don't know why people go off there rocker to put things down, or to say its stuiped to do this and that, He Just asked a question, and i think autometer has taken this into acount that it might leak, but i havent read any where that is has. its an option and if they leaked i don't think they be selling them.

well sence you said APC then theres your problem. Talking Autometer, Check Nascar out and a few other places that use these metters, i dont seen a car with APC on the window unless its an ford or a honda... and i can  with the best of them.

my bad for the snappy response..

what i meant to say is that just because a product is prone to not working correctly [ in this case leaking ] doesn't mean they wont sell it. I dont know first hand, but even if autometer was aware of this problem, they'll most not likely change their setup if cost is a concern.

and as far APC goes, I was just proving that fact. They make crappy products that sell for a fair market value.. even though they know their products are not quality, they wont change the way the make them BECAUSE they sell..

Quick question in relation to this....i have a 90 talon and has the oil cooler in the front...my pressure sender for the guage is missing in action. I was wondering if i could get a picture of a stock setup of a 90 oil filter bracket like Defiant put up for the 91. I have the number for a new pressure sender i just dont see where it would be mounted. The book i got the nuber for the sender said that they were the same from "89" to 94.
