i'm getting parts for the NT conversion, is it a good idea to get the 2 gen maf?( i could probably get one cheap, that's the main reason). i read that it should be matched with 550 injectors which is too much for our NTs. has anybody done this before?
thank you
emi

first please don't list your car as a nt with turbo if it isn't yet, i don't call myself a millionaire because i intend to be later on.

secondly, you could do that, but it will require you to immediately get an s-afc to help tune that thing back out so it will work again.

sorry about that mistake, i didn't intend to offend you at all. i don't even remember having the choice of nt with or w/o turbo before.
so without a SAFC the 2 gen maf will not work, right? might better get a 1 g for the conversion.
thank you for the reply

It's ok, just a pet peeve of mine. Actually the car will run with a 2nd gen maf, it just won't run right. You can try and come close by running 550cc injectors, but ask any 1g turbo guy with a 2g maf and he'll tell you that it ran ten times better after tuning it.

so i could get the 2 g maf plus a S-AFC which will cost an aprox total of $250. would you get a GM maf plus the translator instead ( 180 for the translator and 30 for the maf in a local junkyard).
it would probably be easier to tune.

that's all up to you and what you intend to do with the car. i went with the 1g maf and after removing the lower honeycombs i've had no problems whatsoever with it.

I went with a 2G MAS. It was fine with my 450cc/min injectors. Once I upgraded to 550s, I needed my SAFC.

if i decide to get the 2g maf, like you did timG, don't you think it could be too much to get 450 0r 550 injectors on stock internals? i don't even plan on getting turbo cams, just a basic bolt on with turbo ecu and knock sensor but no pistons or anything else. i got this jdm with 40 k so i want to see how much it can take. my old nt block is getting upgraded.

If you are staying with a n/t block, than I'd suggest you better be putting in 450s at least. Even though you are running low boost, the high compression pistons will increase combustion capabilities, which means you need more fuel. If you don't have adequate fuel, you will knock like a mofo. Just remember it's better to have more fuel in your case, rather than not enough.

good to know that, i was absolutely mistaken. i thought it was better to get AT turbo injectors cause the MT were too much for low amounts of boost.

i finally got a 1 gen turbo maf, following mavisky's advice. can i install it with my nt ecu? i know it has 7 wires compared to the nt maf with only 6. would just matching wires be ok till i swap the turbo ecu?
i want to do things step by step, that's the reason for my question.
thank you

did you also get the wiring clip that goes into the maf? the turbo maf has only 7 wires but uses an 8 pin connector in s 4widex2high layout, whereas the 6 wire nt ecu uses a 6 pin connector in a 2widex2high layout.

if so i guess you could hook up the mas, and just let the 7th wire lay or leave it disconnected, but i honestly don't know how the ecu would respond to the different mas or the 7th wire (be it disconnected or connected). basically i'd just wait and do all the wiring at once.

for reference here are some pics of the differences between the nt and turbo mas i took. (link to bigger pics is at the bottom)

as you can see they main screen is alot larger on the turbo mas, and there is no lower honeycomb on the nt mas (the turbo one is removed).
