i have been thinking hte past week and i decided instead of buying rims and tires and all, im going to save some more money and get a hahn or star kit for my 97 rs its 33,000 miles on it. I have some questions since im still a newbie. DO i need a blow off valve??? i know it releses the pressure from the turbine, but is it safe to use wihout a BOV?. Air filter, what aftermarket airfilter would i use, any? or would i not need anypiping and just use any cone filter like the K&N FIPK? My car is completely stock and i figure this is the easiest and best way to get more ponies, i just want to make sure im planning on doing the right thing. what all is involved in maintenence in the turbo. I really want to get a faster car and im looking into going this route, even though i dont know alot about my car, doesnt mean i dont want to and am not trying:) Thanks for all the help guys, you help alot...

Do a compression test first. You never know....
Yes you need a BOV, and the air filter should come with your kit.

BOOST IS GOOD! :D :thumb:

Yes a compression test it a must, also, I'd consider like James said a new head gasket as well. BTW, you should be at least 180 across the board on all 4 cyclinders. Anything lower than that and I'd think about a rebuild first!

haha I never did a compression test. Oh well, I haven't had any problems and the engine was torn down and checked out by a specialist before it was put into my car (to assure the used engine was up to par).

what about future upgrades. Looking at other performance upgrades i plan on getting after a turbo, for example spark plugs, would you get the plugs for the turbo or non turbo. just small things like that im worried about. My friend has a escort zx2 and he is a doner car for the fitting of a supercharger kit for the zx2 and i am trying to keep up with him basically. Hes getting it for base price for parts at only 2k. and freeinstall tuneup, dyno time and everything, we dont know much about our cars but i want to be able to beat him and alot of other people on the road. Once installed (ill probably get a professional to do it) is there alot of maintenence that i should know about or is it jsut stuff like oil chance and other basic things? i just want to know what im getting into, it seems like a great deal to me to get a hahn stage 1 and put it on my stock rs and get about 210 horse out of it before i make any other mods. THANKS ALOT GUYS

get plugs that run colder so that the plug doesn't get too hot to light the mixture before the actual spark fires. If I was you, I would save a bit and get a stage II kit (either star or hahn). it's a little bit more money but has a good amount of room to expand. As for maintenance I don't know, i've only had my car back for about a week (and it gets to go away again to have the power steering fixed and the Vehicle Speed Sensor checked out/fixed).

i hope you do get boosted

Do not buy plugs for the turbo they are different engines. Get NGK BKR 7e-11 plugs for it. I would also reccomend saving up for a stage 2, and while your at it learn all you can. There is a book by Corkey Bell called Max Boost or something like that, you may want to check that out. There will be extra maintance, not a whole lot but your going to have to keep a much better eye on things.
