I have done some searching on this and I just thought I would tell you guys what is going on and see what you guys have done. I have a stock clutch and I have no idea how many miles are on it. I built my motor about 5000 miles ago and it had 130,000 miles on it then. I bought the car at 90,000 miles and have never changed the clutch. I have been running 10 psi for about 2 years and the clutch still works fine. I dont think it slips or anything. When I pulled my motor I looked at it but ran out of money and time to replace it. I got the ms working pretty good and will set up spark tomorrow too. I also want to turn up the boost to like 15psi or so. Think my clutch will hold it? When and how did you blow your stock or aftermarket clutch? Just curious I guess. Also I posted this in the turbo fourm because it is kinda boost related.

I burned mine at 5 psi. It hold to this day on a stock car with the kit removed but it did slip under boost.

There is no way your clutch will hold 15psi, i m surprised it has held 10psi.

Time for a new clutch before your stranded bud.

Terry

Just blew mine at 8-10 psi.. with a boost leak..... LOL

Ok I had my little fun. I boosted 14 psi and the clutch held fine. No slip or anything. However I did like 3 pulls in 3rd. The first 2 were great aside of being rich. The third messed something up. I had fuel cut or something. Then the car lost power and idled real bad. I just checked compression and the numbers were good. I had some cheap plugs in there and might have fowled a few with the rich condition under that much strain. I will check. But my clutch seamed fine.:thumb:

Ok it was plugs. I changed them out and got my old choppy idle back. Sounds like a big cam but the afrs are great. I found another problem with my msns set up while looking at the the log of my runs. 188 max kpa btw. I was looking at my wideband and it was down to 9:1 afr. When looking at the log it never got below 11.6:1. I will have to re do my table on the logviewer I guess. My car still lives!!!:rocks:

stock clutch
67K miles
1 year at 4psi then
6 months at 8psi then gone

Mine stock clutch started slippin at 7psi. Get a southbend clutch I have one in my car now running 15psi and it grips great.

It is not a vacuum/boost leak. I just have to get the msns zero'd in at idle. If I put the stock injector harness on it the car idles fine. It is just more time I need to spend on the idle.

my stocker has held up through 10k miles at 8 psi and probably another 10k with a 75 shot(Ok I wasn't spraying a 75 shot for every mile of that 10k but you know what I mean) and this clutch now has 92k miles on it. But, it hasn't felt quite right the last few weeks and I have a feeling its on its way out.

Mine held for about 5,000 miles on about 6 PSI before it gave up. I don't think the clutch plate went bad though. Mine went out due to a malfunction with the TOB which ate a little bit off of the teeth on the pressure plate.

I got a SBC stage 1 and it grips so much nicer :thumb:

on 5 lbs with who knows how many miles on it it slips in 2nd shift to 3rd slips shift to 4th slips haha oh well wonder how much longer itll hold especially when i start going up to 7-8 lbs

I blew up my clutch and trans under no boost! haha... I went through two clutches in two weeks for some odd reason! And I didn't burn the clutch, I snapped the center shaft out of the clutch.

Sounds like it's not holding now. Call SBC and get a new one in the mail, before your vehicle leaves you stranded somewhere.

i wish i could, that was after about 5 shakedown runs so hopefully itll hold for a bit longer. I have a dd so its not a big deal usually only drive when im home. clutch is gonna have to wait till motor tear down next summer

I am really curious about this as I have a new OEM spec sachs clutch which I figure should be slightly better than stock as it would come from the factory. Thing is you can't really just say how much boost. It's more important how much tq and hp were you makin. I see this a lot everyone says I can run this much boost on my setup how come you can only run that much kinda thing in the 420a threads while turbo size and fuel and tuning are all variables that will affect mzx boost before detonation. So anyway my point is how much hp but mainly tq were you guys making that may have dynoed before your clutch started to slip and then go?

old thread, but oh well...

I replaced my stock clutch before I went turbo with a stage 2 action clutch....it held up just fine all the way up to 200whp and about 220ftlbs.

I went to the Spec Stage 3+ and that held up beatifully at whatever boost level I threw at it.

Whe I switched transmissions I went with a Luk performance gold series clutch that is slightly better than an OEM stock (mainly because these are the guys that build alot of the stock clutches for most cars now a days) and there gold series is one step up.

However after megasquirt and a day at the dyno I could power through this clutch just by stepping on the gas on freeway (that is with 275whp and 280ftlbs)

As a rule of thumb I would say once you hit the 200ftlbs of torque point, you should start thinking and saving about/for a new upgraded clutch kit. Especially if you track your car, beat on it, and its your daily driver.

Bought baxsom's car last summer (06') the spec 3 clutch was great with just about 4000 miles on the clutch. This year i'm running s16g, MSn'S, e85, at 20 psi and its slipping when i pin it in 3rd and there is only 5300 miles on the clutch right now. Next week i get my s20g and i'll be retuning it so i'll hafta see how well the clutch holds it.

I'll tell you right now if the 16g at 20psi isn't holding it in 3rd then the 20g at the same or similar psi with a similar tune will not hold anything past half throttle with aggresisve driving. You my friend need a SB clutch :rocks:
