I am finishing up my engine/tranny drop and noticing the gears are a little awkward. At first I couldn't get shifter over to put into 1st or 2nd. Now that I can 3rd feels like it it didn't quite go in and forth feels as though out goes into gear then further.

Any ideas on what it can be

Actually from reading your post again, it appears that you have the wrong shifter base or the wrong shifter mount bracket on the tranny for the tranny that you are using.

Its a 420a from a gs into my rs shell. Believe had same shifter assembly and bracket

Yes everything worked fine. The selector arm closer to the block was slightly bent but bent back.

That part concerns me. Not much for bending shifter arms "back" to where they were. First verify that its in the linkage/cables/geometry. Unhook the cables at the eyelets and try the shift arms to see if you can get all the gears. It does sound a lot like something is not adjusted properly. Since there is no real adjustment on our cars (other than the base being put down properly). I do suspect that something is bent (not something in the tranny or the eyelets).
