Quaife and Neon Tranny

Hey guys well I'm going to be getting a neon tranny soon to swap in for the better gear ratios and because my synchros are shot.... My question is about installing the quaife in the new tranny.

I will need to buy a neon speedo drive gear for this install correct? And if so where is the best place to find one of those? Also what about the bearings mentioned on this page: http://www.roadraceengineering.com/quaife.htm

Will I need to buy those and if so where is the best place?

when i did the neon swap and installed the quaife i got the bearings from a dodge dealer

the mitsu dealer wanted like 5 bucks more for the same bearing

as far as the speedo gear

i used the one off the eclipse tranny and put it in the neon case

no problems

you will like this mod
while you are doing all the tranny mods might want to consider upgraded axles as well
the old ones have to come out anyway
that was my reasoning

yea I'll get to axles eventually it'll be pushing it just to gather the money for the quaife right now, but I just wanted to that out of the way since im horrible with saving money

And are those bearings from an eclipse tranny or the neon, or does it not matter?

BTW... is it all up and running yet? and if it is hows everything working out for ya?

If you want, i have the diff bearings new in the boxes from my trans rebuild kit. Make me an offer, i am not planning on using them.

The 3.55 swap is only good if your turbo with some good pressure 15psi+. low boost will be a slug. The speedo gear is fine from your eclipse Diff, be very careful removing it, the tabs that lock it down tend to break.

Be prepared to be disappointed with that trans for a while. I see why you are going that route but it wont make you faster at all, you will be slower. Gotta remember the Neon is quite a bit lighter.

The 3.55 is really not any stronger than our 3.94. Those who argue it is are arguing based on the fact that the ring gear on the diff is smaller in circumfrance (sp). This would theoretically make the gear geometrically stronger but if you actually measure the size, its less than 1/8" smaller. In reality there isnt any difference between the "strength" of the 2 trans's (of similier year and design). Some of the later Neon trans's had a higher torque rating, 155 to 165. Not much change really. If I recall the 2002 trans is the point where the trans was rated 10ft lbs higher.

The one thing you accomplish here is when you do turbo your car, you wont have to consider a tranny swap to reduce wheel spin. That is the chief goal when swapping to the 3.55. The 3.55 is a lower ration which puts a higher load on the motor making it harder to spin the tires. Thsi also creates more heat in the exhaust and you know where that theory goes.

Looks liek the bearings are 23.00 each aftermarket:

Enjoy

yea I'm not expecting any more power until the turbo is put in, and that is fine with me everything im doing right now is preparing the car for turbo, and like i said before my synchros are getting worse and worse everyday on my current tranny, so i was going to have to get that fixed anyways so i figured i would go ahead and do this swap now

I sent you a PM about the bearings
