Hello, Im new to this forum and Ive been thinking of putting a Turbo on my car.. How much actual work is it? Do you have any tips?
 
it is pretty much a bolt-on part besides running your lines and installing controllers and gauges. with all the money your going to be spending on a turbo kit you might aswell pay a shop to do it just incase you mess something up.
 
I will try to make this as short as possible. I bought a 92 T a few weeks ago and am trading mt NA engine for it. I figure I can switch the engines and sell the NA car for what i paid for it. There were a lot of unknowns when I started this project. But everything seems to have worked out so far. I have taken tons of pictures documenting the project, but have nowhere to post the pics. The first question you have to ask your self is are you going to try to boost your NA high compression motor, or are you going to try to find a donor car as I have. I will supply more details if you would like. I don't want to run on if nobody is interested though. PM me if I can host a few pages on your web site.

I have the Hahn Stage 2 kit and I am glad to see that you are considering a turbo for your car. I had mine installed by my shop so that if anything went wrong i had someone to point the finger at. There have been a lot of people that have put a kit on and think that it was easy. I heard that the hardest part is doing the fuel system. Other than that it's just following directions and tightening some bolts.

It also depends on what kit you plan on getting as to the difficulty of the install. NER and Star are the other kits that are available.

i'll say this and people with turbo'd GS and RS don't get mad. for the amount of money you spend on the trubo kit and installation you could probably sell your car, take the money you were going to spend on the turbo kit and buy a factory turbo'd car.
i have started to read about more companies making turbo kits for the 420A powerplant (the neon motor in the 2G gs/rs) and people have been finding that that motor will take boost well. it has higher compression so it can't get as high psi as the 4g63 (mitis turbo motor). HRC even says to sell you car and buy a factory turbo and they make a kit.
i don't know what comes with or how much power a stage 2 HRC kit makes but i drove an eclipse with a stage one and it sucked. the lack of power pre-boost was overwhelmingly apparent.
the newest issue of trubo performance mag has a bolt-on turbo section with two kits for 420A cars. HRC and Star i think. Star only makes an extra 30 hp. so you get 170 somethin for like 3 grand.

you have to ask, does that sound like a good deal to you?
 
To the previous poster. Did you read the thread before you posted ? I didn't swap just the turbo, I swapped the entire motor, computer, supporting turbo electronics and created a custom wiring harness for the turbo computer management. Now I have an NA eclipse to sell. Net cost 0. Well except for time. Maybe a couple hundred bucks for odds and ends. Not to mention, I am sure I can sell my car for a grand more now that it has a factory turbo setup.

i wasn't refering to you. i realized that you did a motor swap. i was giving advide to the kid who asked the original question. i believe it is a better idea to buy a factory trubo than to put a turbo on a 420A motor. though there are some good turbo kits for that powerplant coming out. sorry if i offended you.

to the previous post: i believe that 1G GS/RS still had the same motor as the turbo's only sans forced induction so the turbo kit would be different. but i'm not sure.
 
Yeah, your right. It is pretty pointless to boost a NA engine. You can never turn the boost up. Most of the time, it is better to just buy a turbo car. Then you have all of the proper engine management in place.

ok, isnt it time to come up with a new answer other then "sell your NA and get a turbo" ?

If I turbo my car my insurance wont go up , because the car is listed as NA. IF I sell my car (taking a loss) and buy a 2G Turbo not only do I have to start paying off the interest of the new loan, but I have a higher insurance rate to worry about as well.

So if I get a turbo kit $2600 "loss", if I sell my car for what its worth then I have about another grand to pay off the loan, then umm (ebay says around 11.5K for a 98 Turbo) and then tack on taxes, title, and tags for a total of 13K and I quick call to my insurance compay says 70 a month raise in my premium, so at least $5,000 loss by the end of the first year.

And when I get my new 2GT Im gonna have to start modding all over again, whats the point? I wish people would read what Ive just wrote and STOP telling us NA'ers to sell our beloved 2GNTs!

So what?? What the hell does that mean? Because our cars have higher compression, it's not necessary to boost higher. At 5psi, 420A's are making more power than a stock GS-T.

I driven them as well and I respectfully disagree. Also what other mods did this car have. Was it properly tuned? There are a number of factors as to why it could feel that way.

That's 170 to the wheels. Stock 420A does 140 to the crank. And that kit is available for under $1900. Not 3grand. Stage 2 HP is rated quite a bit higher than that.
In that same section, they also talk about the Hahn kit. Which dyno'd at 225.2 @ the wheels. That was at 5psi. The Hahn kit is available for $2195. So 115 horses for $2200. Yeah, that's a good deal.

Comparing apples to apples, (not like the oranges you brought to the table) I believe it would be less expensive in the long run to turbocharge my 420A.

Please do not come to the NT section of DSMtuners and spout off incorrect information. If you're gonna talk, at least have the info right.

for about $2000 you can modify the 2.0 nt wiring harness on a 1g, buy a good clutch, and install a turbo long block.

Like i did :)
 
well it runs fine so long as i don't break the shift forks.

i'm still on the 14b and its an easy 13 second car at the strip. once i get the tranny back with the lsd and the new 16g on it i should be in the low 13's hopefully.
 
my block is a long block straight from a 1990 with 1991 oil filter housing, intake manifold, and coil pack. its all run by a 1993 ecu, and i'm currently installing a big 16g.
