Check engine light

Got a 95 talon esi and the check engine light is on. IT has a slight oil leak somewhere down below....could this be causing it to come on or is it somethin with the computer or what?

A CEL will come on when the computer detects a problem that is reoccuring throughout your system. Once it has noticed a trend, it will store the code corisponding to the problem and turn on the CEL. Once this has happened you must retieve the code from the computer with a scan tool of some sort or with something as simple as a paperclip for earlier OBD1 cars. Your car is an OBD2, so i believe you need a scan tool, i have never tried anything else, because i have my own scantool.

Once you get the code you look up in the haynes manual what it is. If it is a dealer specific code, you will not have access to what the code means.

you oil leak could be turning on the light if the computer detected a low oil system pressure for an extended time. so, it possibly could be.

I would have a hard time believing that an oil leak will turn on the CEL. Here are a list of the CEL codes....

Tell me which one pertains to oil pressure? No, I would think that it is something else. From what someone told me Autozone (I think) will pull the code for you for free. Once you get the code, the rest is easy. You could go to Satan (the dealership) but they are going to charge you like $90 or so just to get the code!!!! Then gawd knows how much more to fix it. I say get the code on your own, it could be as simple as needing to reset your ecu, or it could be one of your o2 sensors, also not a huge deal. Good luck.

Have you tired the key trick yet ? If not place key as if you are going to start your car, turn until radio comes on, once in that position turn key back and fourth 3 times then count series of lights on the check engine light which is the code but in flashes not numbers.
