i have 98 eclipse RS i was thinking about adding an aftermarket turbo and intercooler, i wanted to know if it was worth the money and the time or should i just be happy... also ive heard alot about timing belts going bad at 50 thousand+ miles is this on all dsms or only certain years?

thanks matt-

I heard the turbo kit is safe for these engines. I don't know for sure though I don't have one installed. As for the timing belt it is recommeneded to change it before the 60K mark.

as i said in another post, its really not worth it for that motor unless you are going to get a big turbo and build your motor.

Whoever said getting an aftermarket turbo kit for your car was talking out their arse. I personally have one of these kits installed on MY Talon ESi. I am only running 5 pounds of boost on a Super 16G and have smoked MODIFIED ALL WHEEL DRIVE FACTORY TURBO ECLIPSES AND TALONS! It cost me a whopping $2800 (yes, it's expensive...but well worth it...and think about this, all the other cars running around with aftermarket turbo kits paid twice as much). The only thing that would be better than a kit is to custom make yourself a kit, but that can sometimes be more costly than just buying a regular kit. BTW, my car passed California standard emissions with one of these kits (Keep in mind that I live in Nevada, so it's a little less strict here, but not much). I have OBD-II on my car ('96) and I passed with flying colors....no problems yet, with over 6,000 miles on the turbo. In my oppinion, well worth it.

the 420a motor has more potential than the 4g6 motor, with the hrc kits you upgrade pistons and can get up to 35 psi out of their super 20g turbo, plus wheather or not you want to admit it, that chrysler motor really cranks out some power when you mod it

this is just my opinion and all, but yeah i think the 420a motor has potential. not as much as the 4g63 tho. fastest rs-turbo runs 11s. fastest turbo motor(4g63) runs 8s and 9s. you cant really compare the two saying the 420a is more powerful than the 4g63.
FOR THE RECORD
i am not dogging anyone here that has a non turbo dsm, just stating the facts...PEACE

Hmm well the 4g63 has years of research behind it as the 420a only has like 2 years (maybe not even that) but remember the fastest maybe mid 11's but that is with Stock interior, cams, head, intake, and heater core power steering and AC to Boot...I am sure that if you wanted to full race trim the 420a eclispe it would run 9's all day long

i think someone would have done it by now if that was the case tho. import drag racing seems like its all about breaking records lately. if there is a chance to run 9s in a 420a motor, they would have already done it. just my 0.02 cents worth........no wars, we all buds

God damn dude, Forward Motion has a Neon with the 420a running 9's with an automatic trans and its Rookie YEAR it ran the 9's...so what it isn't an eclipse Body....SAME engine...

1) I can say my T-25 based 2G blew away Mutt based modified cars because I have. Is it the car or the tuner? I bet its the tuner. Saying I beat X with X is subjective at best. There is always someone with a slower car than you and always someone with a faster car with you. Spouting absolutes based on your observations makes you seem like an a$$.

2) When you start building up motors to run 10's and 9's, you are really taking out all the competition. You have to either talk about stock internals or built up internals. Pick one and go with it. Comparing a stock 2G AWD to a completely built 420A Neon and saying the 420A has more potential is dumb.

3) Based on stock block-stock block comparison, a 4G63 turbo engine has more potential than a 420A with stock internals for 1 simply reason. The 4g63 was designed to be a forced induction engine, the 420A was not. Yes it will stand up to turbocharging very well. Yes it can put a **** load of power out in the stock block configuration, but compared to the room the 4G63 has to play with, its not enough.

Now, with that being said (and probably pissing off all the Non-turbo-but-yet-turboed guys), there is nothing wrong with either engine. I think the 420A is really good design for a NA engine. It has more potential than almost all the other NA 4 cylinders on the block.

[Edit: P.S. I am an a$$hole and entitled to my opinion. If you don't like it and it hurts your N/A sensibilities, tough. :)]

falcondsm...... look bro dont get all mad and ****. that neon is way way way lighter than the eclipse. you must include the power to weight ratio in comparing the two.
besides...how many 9 sec 420a cars are out there? and how many 9 and 10 sec eclipses/talons are out there? 1 neon, not an eclipse, which what this originally was about, and a gazillion eclipses and talons that run 9s and 10s.
on that note, i will remove myself from this thread, preventing any further arguement. of course unless there is another good point to be made.
p.s. i am not mad at you
p.s.s. remember what the topic was about

peace

I just want to say that everyone has valid oppinions. Sure, the 420a doesn't have the same potential the 4G63 does, but it's getting there. Considering HRC's RS is a daily driver still and running consistent 11's...that's pretty good if you ask me...AS good as a 4G63 who can run 10's daily driven. Also, the Talons/Eclipses running 8's and 9's are trailored and I know that one of them has a different body and all, but still DSM's are a bad ass car and no one can deny that (except for the honda owners :) ). Peace!

Back on topic:

If the RS is what you have, then unless you have the funds to sell it and buy a turbo, turbo-ing the 420A is the next best choice IMHO. With the right setup and the right tuning, it will lay down some power. Just be realistic in your goals before you start.

My suggestion is this: If you can, sell your RS and get a GSX or a TSi AWD. Do NOT buy the already turboed front wheel drive DSM's.....if you are considering buying just a plain 'ole TSi or GS-T, then you're better off turboing your RS (trust me on that one). Yup, that's all folks!
