what is the highest RPM i coul shift at in my 96 eclipse RS without hurting anything. I have never gone past the redline mark but i have a friend with an integra and he goes into the part of the tach that is red often. so what is the highest rpm that is safe?

7200 is your redline but I would shift at 7000 at the latest. I used to shift around 6500 or 6800 when I was N/A. Find the powerband it ends before redline.

Dumb question LOL. 6500 is the redline btw. 7200 is for a SVT Focus, I dunno where you came up with that. I've hit near 8000, the gears cut off or something, never did it again after that, was fun tho.

Are you A/T or M/T? I believe the auto cars redline is 6500 but on the manual cars you hit fuel cut at 7200 but the redline is acctually at 7000 on the guage. I have no experience with automatic 2gnt's but I doubt that you can get to a true 8000 rpm since your car shuts off fuel at 7200, but again this may be different on an auto car.

ive got it up to 9500 rpm for 3-4 seconds.... by accident redlining 3rd and shifting it into 2nd LOL.... instead of 4th ... LOL....

ditto but I didnt get so high, i think i hit 8.300... there's that sick feeling as your engine shuts itself down for those 2 seconds,, and you pray you didnt bust anything LOL

(and this is why i hate driving w/ more than 2 passengers cuz my knees end up hitting the steering wheel and my shifting looks alot like I'm trying to itch my ribcage)

but on the M/T's the redline is in fact 7200 (stock)

yea i have that bust feeling too after that i was like o shit i think i blew the motor

These Oh shit situations do not constitute a redline though. Just because you got it up past the redline does not mean it's not the redline. The reason the engine starts to die is because you hit fuel cut at 7200 so your car just kills all fuel into the cilinders and it feels like the car falls on it's face. Trust me the M/T redline is 7200

I hit 8400 and snapped my alt belt and it then pushed my PS belts off too. I think it was because the mechanic didnt tighten my mew alt down tight enough.

I've done this as well. Blew my power steering belt, and by an act of god didn't blow timing belt (which was 20k overdue, unknown to me)

When I race, I shift right at redline. BTW, powerband ends right around 5200rpms IIRC.

fry guy i know that btw means by the way but waht does iirc mean?

my engine (4g63 NA, but now with turbo) hits max hp at 6000 rpm, past that and your not gainin anything and acceleration slows to a crawl...so i alway shift between 6000 and 6500 rpm...when racing that is.

Why do people Shift at like redline or anywhere above 6.5, being that the power band on our car's is between 5.750 - 6.250...

I just don't understand, you're beating the shit out of your
motor/tranny for no reason :barf:

**EDIT**: Ohhh Yea, I hit fuel cut once by mistake racing this loud ass civic, I didnt have exhaust by the time and we went from a 40mph roll and I just forgot to shift 3rd :barf:. Anyways, I think I hit it at 6.850(7.500 I'd guess on 9k gauges... My gauge goes to 8k only OMG )

Side note: The redline is not where the fuel cuts off (7,200 or 7,500)..
The redline is actually at 6.5k (Auto and Manual)

Because if you shift at the peak HP (say 5500) you'll lose rpms and be below peak horsepower again. Anything about 5500 and you are still making max HP, whereas if you shift at 5500 you are no longer making max hp. if you shift at redline you won't dip far below 5500, meaning that you'll continue to make nearly max rpm.

You've got a point... That's why most people shift btwn 6k - 6.5k!
It's nutz to shift at 7.2k, you're killing your engine big time!

You gotta feel the point when you gotta shift!!!

But, If you think you know how to race just by flooring it and shifting on
Redline or past it.

You're wrong...

The AF/X ECU street/strip version, raises redline to 7500, so I cant see how people shift there normally without hurting the car. The race version raises the rpm redline to 8100, but you need upgraded head components.
