mach v engine rebuild kit?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

i just checked howell's website and their kits are twice as much as mach v's. im a college student on a budget and the price of the mach v kit did not seem too bad. does anyone have mach v's kit on their dsm or have any idea how well it would add to a 2gnt's performance?:dsm:

This complete engine from rebuild kit from Top Line includes a complete gasket set, pistons and rings, main and rod bearings, thrust bearings, timing belt, balance shaft bearings, expansion plugs, and oil pump. Does not include cams or timing belt tensioner. All parts are Top Line brand, and meet or exceed OEM specifications. Choose stock bore or .020 over-bore. Sorry, no substitutions are allowed with these kits. Also, these kits may not be returned. Updated

The thing is they dont mention what kind of pistons/rods they use, so for all you know they could be the OEM ones.

it says that they are Top Line brand and that they either meet or exceed oem specs. which would be better for my car in the end? im not going to buy it right now because there are other things i would like to get, but for future reference, which would you say is better? also, since its a rebuild kit, would it act like the internals on the HRC stage 3 kit and drop the miles my engine down to 0?:dsm:

Well you see, the howell bottom end comes with forged parts or beefy parts, and most people get je or weicso pistons along with eagle or crower rods. Since all machV says that it meets or exceeds OEM parts I have no clue to what they use, you would have to ask them through email or find someone that has the kit.

Just remember you get what you pay for.

yea i understand. and with my limited budget i want to be sure that i do it right the first time. when i checked howell's site, they had a bunch of specifics to choose from on how you want your kit setup. i was just wondering what a good setup would be for my car? sorry for all the knoob questions:dsm:

From the way it sounds, the Mach V kit only seems to be a "stock" sorta rebuild kit. If it only meets and/or exceeds OEM then its probably not what you want for a bossted application.

If you are looking for a bottom-end for boost, then I would say look to Howell, VT, etc.

on howell's site where they list the rebuild kits for n/t eclipses, the first choices you have are either between a 2.0 performance bottom end kit and a 2.0 performance bottom end long rod kit. which one is a better choice? i was assuming the regular performance bottom and when i clicked on that, there were a few more choices as to how the kit was to be made. those choices were.........

pistons-------8.6,10.5,12.5
bore size-----std,20 over,.030 over,.040 over
main bearing size-------std,25mm,50mm
rod bearing size---------std,25mm,50mm
rods-----------eagle,eagle extreme

what should i choose to make this kit perform really well? at the moment i am looking at an all motor setup but there is still a chance that i might upgrade to turbo in a year or so. thanks for any help.:dsm:

If you want to go turbo, you should go with the 8.6:1 pistons. You will be able to boost alot more with those, if you want an all motor setup, go with a higher compression piston. Make sure you know what you want in the future though, before you go out and make a big decision like this. If you go with 8.6:1 you WILL be slower than stock compression(9.6:1 I think??) but when you get your turbo you will be happier than ever because you will be able to boost a whole lot more. Howell would probably be a better choice. They use good parts, and it isnt too expensive. Hope this helps some.

i have pretty much made up my mind that with this car i will go for an all motor setup with a possible shot of nitrous in the future. so because i am doing that i should go with 10.5 or 12.5 pistons? what should i go with for the other areas?:dsm:

12.5:1 Would be the highest compression you could, but I have heard of there being some sort of problems with that, as far as a high compression piston in a 2.0 liter motor. Keep in mind if you are going all motor that you will be very lucky to get 200-220 whp, and it will be an expensive road. If you do it it will be nice though. 10.5:1 would be fine, and you can still run nitrous in the future if you wish. Getting the howell kit would be your best bet, and then maybe get some new cams and some cam gears and put them in while you have the engine out and torn apart. I think you would gain 12-20 hp out of the motor by going 10.5:1, I *think*(dont flame me if I am wrong) that you would gain about 3-5 hp on each piston. You also might think about porting and polishing your heads while you are doing this, send them off the be machined and all cleaned up, then maybe port and polish your exhaust manifold and all of that good stuff. Just depends on yor budget. Good luck.

thanks for the help man. i will begin looking into that this afternoon before work. at the moment im just trying to make my car look nice. once i start the performance this will probably be my first mod and should be about a year off so i want to get all of the research out of the way while i can. thanks again for the help and i will make sure i let everyone know how it all goes once its on and i will include pics:thumb: :dsm:
