500 horses possible?

hey every1. i'm pretty new to the forum and i've already heard a lot of mixed opinions. no doubt i'll get more of the same but here goes....i recently bought a 99 Eclipse. my hp goal is 500. is it possible to get my n/t up to the that? should i look into a swap before i start modding this car? i know they're expensive but if that's what it'll take then just let me know. thanks

If that's your goal, buy a new car. There are VERY few DSMs with 500hp and 99% of those are 4G63s. Sorry to rain on your parade but I'm not going to lie to you.

Yes you can hit 500 HP but it will take a lot of time and $ in any car. It is possible with the motor that you have, and I doubt you will be able to swap a 4g63 into the car. Basicly you will need a rebuild with a turbo and Nitrous to get there. You may be able to hit it with just a big ass turbo, but I would bet you will need the laughing gas, if nothing else to spool that turbo. Don't let these guys tell you it can't be done, it won't be cheap though. I'm hoping to be in the 400's with my setup here in a little bit.

i'm not going to lie to you, so let me tell you that it won't happen.

it's not that your motor can't handle it, it's not that it can't be done, but its that i don't believe it will be done by you.

building and maintaining a 500hp car from a car that started with only 150hp is a tall feat for a dedicated race shop, much less a guy who's new to the car scene and doesn't really understand all the little things that slowly add up over time.

for instance my 92 nt came with only 135 hp, and now that i've swapped egines, burnt through a few tranny's, killed a clutch or two, and am currently looking at tearing the bottom end out of it again this weekend i can tell you that for the near 300hp i have i've probably spent in excess of $6000 just to keep it going every day and its not that reliable right now.

now you go add 350 hp on top of your 150 and we're talking breakage issues that would make me give up and i'm on my second engine/third tranny here. the bottom line is that if you want 500hp call up a shop, and open up your checkbook. it can be done and even done as a daily driver, but by the time your done you could've put a down payment on a viper that makes 500hp stock.

i wish you luck in pursuing your goal of 500hp, but don't be afraid to humble your ambitions and realize that even in the mid 300's you'll have a seriously quick street car that doesn't have much to fear and can be done alot simpler.

I do have a crew of experienced guys that are willing to help me in reaching my goal and i'm confident i can get there. i also have some fairly deep pockets and i have no problem spending the money on this project.

by thw way, being able to buy a 500hp Viper might make u feel good, but i'm sure it doesn't even come close to the sense of accomplishment and pride you'd have in building your own 500 hp monster. good luck every1

Thats very possible, lil buddy. I'm starting my 2.4 project next week, and the builder of my shortblock estimates reaching close to 650hp with his 2.4 before it blows up. then starts the 2.6.

Thats the thing; where I'm at even if I get 300hp on the 420a, thats what a high 14's car at best? Not respectable considering how much you gotta dump into the car to get there. Go big or go home I say. Besides, the cost to do what I want vs the cost to do it the normal way comes out the same , so why not.

Not much respect will be given if you turbo the car without beefing the internals. At least for me, I want more torque and a solid engine, thats the main thing. Now 300whp, thats respect!

i feel a 2.4 420a has more potential in the long run ...the added displacement gives u faster spooling of bigger turbos..which is a good thing

That is the goal I set for myself and I will hit it but you need to have a big turbo I am not going to use nitrous but will later on. YOU need to decide on a turbo now and build around the turbo since that will be the heart of the system. Iam having a custom turbo made from www.turbochargers.com they gave me the best price for what I want. I have been saving my money for a while and now Iam ready to get started on my mission.

shit i hit a 14 flat on only 16 psi on my car out of a 14b. i'm sure that with a 16g or my 14b turned up and running right i'd be deep in the 13's and that'd be more to do with lack of traction than horsepower. i've trapped 104 on that 14b with a major pre-turbo exhaust leak that had me stuck at 16 psi no matter what i turned the mbc to.

You dont count. Youre a 4G63 in a lighter car.

A stage 2 turbo kit can get you into the high 13's. It puts your car around 240-250 whp (about 280-300 crank) which is what the 420A can handle in stock form. (yes they can run 13's, i know a few who did run 13's and they were spinning the tires) oh and the NT 2g's are lighter than 1g's, if not about the same weight.

I know where to get a stage 2 kit fro 1600 (if they still have them) im paying about 2800 for my kit but im also getting lots of extra stuff with it that the normal kits dont have plus some extra free stuff. After i get a exhaust and a SAFC..ill be fine. just rebuild the bottom end and i can run more boost and make some pretty good power. SO its not that expensive to turbo a NT eclipse if you look around for deals and do research first and get what you need.

500, you can hit if you rebuild the bottom end. Rebuild the bottom end and then you can hit 500 hp just as easily (or hard) as a 4G63 could. might cost a bit more but still.

There is a rebuild kit for 1100 trhat has, rods, pistons, main and rod bearings, better oil pump, gaskets, and a couple other things.

500 is possible, but it will be just as hard (maybe a little harder than a 4G63) to get there. That is my end goal, but right now im just working on getting the kit and getting it installed, and running fine. then ill worry about rebuilding the engine.

If youre going to rebuild the engine, its wiser to do that first before going turbo, as you will have to remove the entire turbo system once you rebuild the engine and leave it off during the entire break in period to prevent knock.

That 1600 is a good price, but that guy left a non working # . Also if you get the 1100 kit from Howell, makes sure you get the extreme eagle rods instead of the regular ones for 100 more. Even the tech guys at HRC dont particularly like the eagles when at that high hp; theyve seen em bend (the regular ones). They use Crower.

You should get a 2.4 bore it out to a 2.6 and forge the internals. Then re-do your head and lower the compression a lil bit.


Theres a guy thats using the 2.4 and going to a 2.6 over at www.2gnt.com and hes aiming as high as u and i think hes gonna do it first on that car. Hes got a black car with white graphics i think. Dont hold me to that tho.

the above statement is so very true.

also it will be a long,hard,expensive road. But if that is what you want i wish you the best of luck and i hope that you reach your goal.
