hey, i was thinking about rebuilding my 1.8, and i am thinking about larger pistons and higher compression. First of all, can i even get these pistons? How high of a compression could i go? How much HP are we talking about? I would love to throw a turbo in there, but i don't want to invest more than what the car is worth! Thanks for any info!!

You can shave the block and the head a ways on the 1.8L that will bump your compression and you will still have your stock pistons. The only thing to worry about is is the pistons will take the power or if they will fall apart. You could just get some custom pistons from Ross or JE or any of the other piston manufactures.

I have heard about shaving the head before, but doesn't that reduce my displacement? how much hp are we talking about? Would i have to find pistons just by size, and how much compression and HP could i get out of this?

thanks!

I am going to be getting a 1994 eclipse (base model). Its the kind with a 1.8L engine and only 92 hp. Its also an auto which sucks. Anyway... what would some easy, inexpensive ways to give the car some more power. Any links to performance sites for 1 generations would be helpful.

Don't buy it, you'll be sorry...well I warned you.

Don't even think about racing it...unless you want to race tercels or spend a fortune to get 40HP more out of the 1.8 and be able to race a stock 2.0dsm. Of course, everyone will think your car is a 2.0L everytime they race you so there will be millions of hondas just waiting to spank you and make you look bad...don't do it.....

I have a 91 laser rs non-turbo that I am going to hop up when the snow melts and I wanted to get some opinions on how to go about doing this. I would really apreciate your comments. The engine is still stock the way it sits and has 114k miles on it.

wow, theres pretty much nothing to do with an rs model.. i mean, thats sohc right?? it has to be.. no offense though but i would start off with the basics first..like i/h/e..then maybe upgrade your electrical system, upgrade your fuel system, then last, if you're intersted, get a turbo..

o ok, then yeah, just the above of what i said..for the quickest hp boost with little amount of money, the i/h/e.. i forgot the cam gears.. i bought one for the intake side and i have to say, this is the best investment by far..

i/h/e? forgive me for my ignorance but some of this new #### is like a foreign language to me. Older cars before sensors and all this newer #### confuses me and I am not up with todays terminology. Thanks once again

4G63ownzu your signature thing says 4G63>vtec but IMO it should say 4G63>420A>vtech.. Can't forget about us N/A guys we are better than vtecs.

Free and Gud:
Remove A/C
Remove Backseats

Monay Mods
K & N FIPK for an intake
Custom 2.5'' full exhaust
Ported Intake, Header, TB (cyl head?)
Turbo Intake Cam
Adjustale Cam Gears
Underpulley kits
Larger Injectors and a fuel management system (after the above mods)

Custom Cam Grinding?

for the pro

Higher compression Pistons, then Nitrous or Turbo.. you need the stonger pistons tho.....flywheel lightening, youll need a stronger clutch if you do these mods too...

Okay I have a 1990 Eclipse GS 1.8 ltr 5 spd. and so far I have put a K & N filter on it and cut out my intake canister, Also I have removed my cat and put 2 1/2" exhaust all the way back with a standard stainless DTM muffler. I know that the 1.8 is pretty weak but I am starting to get a little power out of it and its all I have to work with right now. Anyways I have been searching the internet and mostly I find upgrades and mod's for the 2.0, 2.0 Turbo, and 2.4 so if anyone can help me with sites for this motor or mod's or upgrades or anything I would really really appreciate it. Also my roomate has a 1989 Honda Prelude 2.0 SI with 2 1/2 exhaust being the only mod for power and I want to be able to take him. Also I just joined this site so maybe I will find alot of info here but anybody that has the same 1.8 ltr motor that has done mods I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

Thanks for any help you can give,
:dsm:

also like I said I am new to this so bear with me.

don't know anything about them, not to be a d!ck but i would recomend getting a 1g turbo if at all possible, or a 1g n/t with the 4g63, at least u can later get a turbo

or you could get a muscle car

but maybe you could get the 1.8 to be snappy, like i said i don't know anything about them

Thanks anyway, I still owe $ on the car if you can believe it and the motor only has 45k on it. So I wanna do what I can with it and eventually I will get a GSX or GST most likely a GST. But I know this motor has to have some potential, already I have boosted it a noticeable amount I just want to see how much can be done to this motor because I am finding out that their is very few of these really modified and I am stuck with the car.........

Have you tryed dsmtalk.com? They have a whole section dedicated to non-turbos and 1.8s.

ha...the 1.8...well you did intake and exhaust...did you put a header on it? That can help, also lower resistance spark plug wires, and maybe new plugs if they look like it can use it. You could also make an intake pipe...I don't know if any companies make them, I don't know if an intake pipe from a 2.0L n/t will fit, but I'm sure you could custom make one with a couple 90 degree bends and straight pieces of pipe. Then just cut and weld it yourself...or let somebody else know where the cut and welds need to be done...then just send it to be powdercoated. That might add 2-5hp.

With all that done...you could have asa much as 10-15 more hp...that is if your plugs needed replacing also.

There are other things you can do...but it'll start to cost a lot more money...so unless you ask me to go on, I wont

Thank You for the info, I will check out dsmtalk.com, Also you I do want to use a new intake but I don't know what to do with my maf sensor? Yeah any upgrades I am willing to dump money into it I just might take some time..........the spark plugs are good but I will see today about getting new wires, like I said earlier the motor only has like 40-45k miles on it.

Again thank you for all the info I really appreciate it and I will update as it goes..........also does anyone now where to get the blinker lights in front and the middle piece(its a 90 with the flip up headlights) also the rear euro lights for reasonable?

Thanks,

sorry i couldn't help much, only advice is just don't go overboard and then want a turbo cuz then your out the money you put in it, i have done stuff like this with my car. i got a 16g and now i want a new turbo, and i will never get near what i paid for the turbo

good luck with the car/mods and remember to keep it :dsm:

Heres a suggestion, and a little advice...dont bother putting any more money in that thing than you have to. use it as a beater and save up to get a Turbo talon, or eclipse....trying to modify the 8 valve single overhead cam 1.8 is a waste of money and time, your friend has the 2.0 DOHC honda motor, plus its an 89 prelude so hes lighter then you are.
and depending on how his runs, from being so old, you might take him, but its highly doubtful, larger car+smaller motor=not worth trying to mod

i hate giving people news like this, if you wanna experiment go ahead, its good to know your heart is in the right place, but id see it as making sence for you to save youy money, because the more you dump into the useless one, the less youll have to buy the TURBO first gen, and the longer it will take :talon: :thumb:

Thanks.........yeah I know it is a little bit ridiculous trying to make this car fast and I won't dump that much in it I just can't get a Turbo yet and it may be a while(a year or two) so in the meantime I want to do what I can with my spare $ ( yes I probably should just save my $ and by a Turbo & maybe I will) also my roomates Prelude has like 180k miles on it..........

Thanks for all the continued advice and info

I have the 1.8 liter....i feel your pain.....

An intake for a 2.0 liter will fit, I bought mine off Ebay, it rubs against the battery a little, but no big deal. I feel/hear a slight difference, but not much.

I just plan on sprucing up the looks a little (clear corners, 17" rims, lowering) and adding a few power mods (exhaust, plugs and wires), maybe a strut bar or something too. I just want to keep it clean and running nice so that when I get a turbo I'll have an extra car to use when I run into problems with the 4G63.

I suggest the same to you, keep the mods simple and clean, and dont run around like some punk thinking your car is fast just because its a DSM. For the love of God, we have like 92 horses!

Also, be ready to be constantly asked "is that the turbo" and then having to explain that it isnt and its slower than death on crutches. My favorite excuse is to say I bought it for handling and I dont need all that power...yeah right.....

I just did this to mine last night and it worked excellent............you said that the 2.0 intake works but do you have a maf sensor on yours? if so how did you get around it?

Thanks

:dsm:

Yup, mines has got the maf sensor. Since the MAF sensor goes inside the stock paper filter (which is inside the stock airbox, duh), all I did was remove the stock airbox and filter and put the MAF inside the K+N filter I got. There are three clamps that hold the maf sensor to the aorbox, I used them to connect the Maf to the filter. Then I connected the piping to the stock MAF housing and plugged it back in. I used some rubber sleeves I got with the intake and hose-clamped the fcuk out of it. Its not hard at all. If you need additional help or pictures just ask, but I'll have to wait until tomorrow to take the pictures.

Also, Ebay is a great place to get lots of parts, just be careful because there is alot of junk on it too.
