I cleaned out my throttle body yesterday and it had a pretty thick black, dark black gunk on the back side of the throttle plate. I looked inside the intake manifold and it was covered in the gunk too, probably part of the reason i've been having as many intake backfires as i have been. Anyway, has anyone else had this build up in their cars. Like i said, it was dark black, didn't have a distinct smell (not oil or gas or anything), and had a pretty thick consistancy. It cleaned right off the throttle body with a little carb cleaner, I didn't spray the carb cleaner into the intake manifold because that would be stupid. I was thinking the sources would either be EGR or the pressure regulators on the valve cover any thoughts?

the black grime and shit would be from the back fires it wouldn't be causing the backfires. when i took off my stock filter box to put on my CAI it had that stuff in it i thought it was oil because of the breather hose.

This might help explain the crud build-up.

The back-fires are more than likely a mis-fire condition or the ignition of the fuel charge before the valves are fully closed. Most of the time it is secondary ignition (plugs and wires) related though.

The first thought is for the plugs and wires. I've seen plug wires that have markings on them from where the current jumps through the insulation on the wires instead of making it all the way to the plug. Basically... the path of least resistance law here. If it's easier to go through the wire instead of to the plug, it will jump through.

On much the same note, if the plugs are gapped too far (worn out or improperly gapped) then the spark can't jump across. Again, high resistance and it's easier to go through the wire than across the gap.

The last thing is basically a matter of valve timing, cylinder ignition and spark plug ignition. If there's hot spots on the piston top, they may retain enough heat to cause the incoming fuel charge to ignite before the valves fully close. This is probably not the case but it MIGHT happen. The fact that you've got alot of grime inside the intake manifold may support this theory.

Get two or three cans of Mopar Combustion chamber cleaner from the dealer. Read and follow the directions when using it. Use one can once a week for two or three weeks. This will clean not only the throttle body, but also the upper and lower intake manifold, intake ports, valves and the combustion chamber of most the carbon build up. Not only will your engine be more efficient but you might notice a very modest increase in performance in severely dirty situations.

well the spark plug wires look fine, i know they need to be replaced but no signs of any arching or anything like that. The plugs are relatively new and were gapped correctly when i put them in but i haven't checked them, i will though. I'm also going to go get some of that cleaner because i need it anyway, thanks for all the help.
