I've had my 97 Eclipse for about 6 months and have been thinking of putting in either a cold air or a short ram... the only thing that's stopping me is that I don't know what the difference is. I realize that they are different sizes, but what is the difference in effects on the car? Any info whould be nice.

I also would like to know where to get a good price on the better of the two, if not both.

Well, cold air intake sits much lower in the engine bay therefore pulling much colder air, while a short ram sits next to the engine therefore pulling much warmer air. Either of the 2 are better than the stock air intake plastic crap but i would go for the cold air made by AEM and also get the By-pass valve for it. http://www.aempower.com/

good luck

get the cold air. you will thank yourself later. cold air is much better for the engine and cant hurt it. if you are afraid of hydrolock then get the bypass valve, but remember the filter is on the left side and water usually builds up on the right side so its tough to hydrolock your car up. you would have to hit a pretty deep puttle!

i dont think they do. well at least aem doesnt. why dont you make a custom cai. all you need is pvc piping from homedepot and a filter and some time.

you don't need the bypass valve unless you live where it rains a lot, and there are a lot of deep puddles. the only difference between the short ram and cold air is length of the pipe. the short ram sticks out into the engine compartment between the radiator and the computer. the cold air intake drops down and goes into the fender well, in front of the splash guard and behind the driver side baffle, making it almost completely shielded from water anyway. a good website to get a quality intake for low cost is www.adventon.com. good luck and have fun with your car.

i dont think so. the 1g engins is a 4g63 block so the intake is on the left. there is no room for a cold air intake to go to the bottom of the engine bay. on a 2g there is plenty of room where the stock intake is to get down there after the stock intake is removed

Ram Air is easy...to describe if you have pop-ups. Replace your headlights with small sealed beams in the clear cover, and port the open headlight hole to the aircan. Pop up your headlights for Ram Air ;)

this has been stressing me out for awhile now! is hyralock a permanent condition that requires you to rebuild the engine? do you have to take off the front bumper to install a CAI? what would it take or how exactly would a filter suck in water? i'm thinking about getting an IceMan system, that way i can switch between short ram and cold air anytime i want. does anyone know how hard would it be to switch back and forth?

not hard at all. if you know how they come off the it will take probably 20 minutes the most to switch them.

i have a aem cai. i dont swith but its easy to install. the only hard part is the first time you get it in. the only difference between the two aem's is the rubber mount. personaly i think u should just get a cai. they give our cars a big difference. the short air intakes imo suck to much heat from the engine, but its up to you.

do you have a bypass valve or think its necessary? do you need to take off the front bumper when you install it?

Hydrolock is when liquid water enters your cylinders. Air is able to be compressed easily but liquid water is not. When the piston comes up and compresses, the water has no place to go. If you are lucky your head gasket will blow, if you are not, the piston may buckle, the rod may bend, the head may even separate from the block!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont have the bypass valve. you got to be careful thats all. its pretty hard to get water in the intake, you would have to literally submerge it in water for a while. you dont have to remove the bumber. just jack the car up a little to put the filter on thats all.

I went to The site for Performance Tunning and they sell a Injen Ram Intake for our cars and a 59.00 Cold Air extension kit. Wouldn't that be a great way to save money. 99.59 from Adventon for the ram intake and then only 60 more for the Cold air extension.

I would definetly go CAI over Ram Intake. But I found this site http://www.airdynamicracing.com/ and their prices are really cheap but the parts are no name generic. But like I have said before I'm a non brand name type of person. $339.00 for a Header Muffler and CAI isn't to bad. You can't tell me a AEM CAI is going to increase your HP more than a Generic CAI. For one you really aren't gonna get that much HP out of a intake anyway. Just my 2 cents

yeah you made a good point. aem says a 9 hp hain and a 10 for torque gain. thats the minimume gain for both. i believe you get close to 15 hp but more than 12 hp for sure. and for torque you can definately feel the gain. good luck on your decision.

what exactly is the difference performance wise?

Im about to purchase a CAI system soon. Oppinions on which to buy?!

What about the aem v2 intake? any good or bad comments about that?
